Twisted Rope Braid Updo
9:24 PMIt's been some time since I've done my last hair tutorial, hasn't it? Well ever since I posted my "Would You Rather?" tag video and MAC Turquatic Inspired tutorial I've had a large number of requests for the rope-braided updo that I wore in both posts. It's a look that I've sported a lot this past summer, and I think it would still be really chic to wear this fall with a warm scarf around the neck. :)
Products Used:
Snag-Free Hair Elastics (similar)
Goody Spin Pins (for blondes or mini pins)
LOFT Sequin Flower Pin (similar, similar, similar)
One tip that I find useful with this hairstyle, and most other updos in general, is to work with dirty hair. I know! Some of you might think it's gross, but if you skip a day of washing hair and instead use a dry shampoo (I'm currently using Suave Dry Shampoo which I talked about here) to soak up the oils and give volume, you actually get a ton of texture and the hair really holds the style nicely.
Great for those too-lazy-to-wash-hair days! I know I'm not the only one who gets those, right? ;D
And a view from the back. I can't tell you how much of a lifesaver this hairstyle was during the hot summer days when I didn't want anything touching my neck!
The best part about this hairstyle is that it's easier to do than a traditional 3-strand french braid or dutch braid so it goes much quicker. At the same time, not many people do this type of twisted rope braid so you'll get people asking you how you did it because it looks more complicated than it is! I'm all about the high impact-low effort when it comes to hair. ;)
I hope you guys enjoyed this hair tutorial and let me know in the comments if there are any other hair requests that you have!

I love this hairstyle, you look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh wow here I am thinking it's going to be super complicated and turns out it's as easy as brushing my hair! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm just so bad with hair styling though! I'll have to give this a try still xP
I can't French braid my own hair at all, so this is perfect. Super simple and beautiful. Thanks, Jen!
ReplyDeleteyou look orgeous!! Such an elegant hair style!
ReplyDeletethis looks amazing! I think it'll be even more amazing to wear it at night and then see the beautiful waves in the morning!
ReplyDeleteGood tutorial, Jen! The twisting in the opposite direction is something new, plus this braid looks better than a regular braid on my hair because it's fine in the front. Added it to my to-do list!
ReplyDeleteOops, I meant it works for me because MY hair is fine in the front.
ReplyDeletevery nice! I wish my hair is longer so that I could do this style. =)

ReplyDeletethanks for this tutorial, the instructions were simple to follow and the results look great!
ReplyDeleteWill there be any chance that you will post a fish-tail braid tutorial cos I always wanted to pick up the ways to make the braid but the instructions from other sites weren't that friendly to follow. :)
I gave this look a try since I've always loved the side braids. I did have one hang up though - do you have problems doing one side over the other? I am right handed, so I figured the right side would be easy. Wrong! I had to do the right side at least three times before it came out looking even remotely like what you did, while the left side came out perfect first shot.
ReplyDeleteDo you have issues doing one side over the other?
Maybe it will just take some practice <3
its nice tutorial look nice.
ReplyDeletewith thanks

i like hairstyles i want to say that i can serme whole life to the hairstyles i can hairstyles easily do this i like it.hairstyles are a primitive one and often linked with the popular and demanding styles in 60s and 70s both in men and women. A parallel hairstyles approach is still followed for girls and women in modern hairstyles amazing hairstyle with a little untidy that confers a curly hairstyles rock & roll look to your hair. This curly hairstyles. style has gone through slight changes over the time. Unlikely to older styles.
ReplyDeleteHi, Jen!
ReplyDeleteIt's new year's day and I was looking for a tutorial on how to braid your own hair and I stumbled upon your post. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this and I was just amazed that with low effort (compared to other braids) you could have a great look like this. [Of course it helps that you're pretty, too. :)] Used to think this takes sooo much work. Definitely all for high impact-low effort hair styling! Thank you so much!
