Unii Palette Review & Comparisons to MAC and Z-Palette Video

1:39 PM

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for your words of encouragement from last time. I will say that my sadness was from trying to lift up a friend who is really hurting right now, and she does read my blog so I know that your sweet comments have really helped her as well. :) I'm constantly bowled over at how much love and caring you generously give since I feel like, who am I to deserve all of the kindness that you freely give? I'm encouraged that I'm not hated for opening up a little bit. I feel like God has really given me this blog to help me through the tough times as well as the easy so THANK YOU. I feel like I am wrapped up in a thousand hugs. ^.^

Anyway, getting to the topic at hand, I'm really excited to share the Unii palettes with you. This review has been a long time coming but I finally had time to depot my NYX shadows that I'd been dying to consolidate. If you've been a long-time follower of my blog you know how much I love my NYX single shadows and that I have about a billion-million of them. I'd been having a lot of trouble with them because although I love them to death they really take up such a large space in my makeup drawers. In fact, most of them were in a totally different room (versus my vanity which I moved into the living room so that I have natural light) so they were going sadly unused. I really wish NYX would come up with their own palette because I'd buy them without thinking twice but until then, I think this is a really great option.

Here's my video review, as well as my comparison to MAC palettes and my thoughts on Z-Palette:

Here's a little behind-the-scenes with my depotting. I couldn't really take pics during the process because it's MESSY but I was thinking that maybe I'll make a video of my own technique soon.

And here are all the palettes I received (eggplant, twilight, lemongrass, pomegranate, snow)

Snow

Pomegranate

Eggplant

Lemongrass

Twilight

As you can see, I could fit 10 NYX shadows in each palette while keeping the thumb grip in. I also just think the shadows look pretty when they are turned diagonally, isn't that silly of me? ;D I did notice while I was depotting that some of the NYX shadow pans are shallower than others but it's not really a big deal when it's in the palette.

In the video you can see that the magnetic sheet that comes with each palette is segmented into 3 long strips. They happen to be a really nice size for just cutting into squares to attach it to the NYX shadows. Just be sure to remember to write down the name of the shadow right when you depot each one so you don't forget which is which! (This happened to me when I accidentally placed a shadow in my palette without adding the magnet to the back. I had to look at my own swatch pics to figure out what it was. lol.)

Final verdict? I absolutely was impressed by the quality and design of these palettes. It feels nice and sturdy, has details like the thumb grip which actually is useful, has a built-in mirror, comes with sticky magnets, and is great for cleaning and re-organizing what's inside. I only wish that it wouldn't smudge as much (not that I would change it, but it's something to be noted) and that it were a bit less expensive since each palette comes in at $29. As I noted in the video, Z-Palettes are $20 and I'd rather pay the $9 extra for the extra quality and durability since these are much more travel-friendly and clean.

I hope this review helped any of you who are interested in purchasing the Unii Palette! My favorite is the white one and I'm really hoping they come out with more colors in the future like *pink* because, knowing the quality, I will buy another without a second thought. :)

  3. this is such a cool review. i am not a depotting person as i don't tend to keep many stuff with me. but i love the LOCK on this palette. i think this was the first time i saw one. LOCKs are so important.

you are as flawless as always!

  4. Wow, I love this concept. I wasn't sure what the magnet strips were at first (thought they were for attaching the palette to a magnet board or fridge) but now i'm enamored by the idea. Great review! Your NYX shadows look so organized now.

  5. Yay, great review! I was SUPER impressed with the UNII palettes too.

I think, if you didn't want to travel around much though, TKB has Freestyle palettes very comparable to the small (square) Z-Palettes for only $4.50 (but they have a $18 minimum or so for orders). I think the UNII palettes are a little expensive for buying more than 2 or 3 of and I couldn't possibly afford enough to depot everything I have into (nor would I want to! I have some really pretty blushes lmao), so I have two UNII palettes for traveling, and 3 TKB palettes for holding everything else.

  8. Hi Jen!

I've been a silent lurker for a long time, and I'm so grateful for your double eyelid tape tutorials.

I was wondering if you could a tutorial on people with hidden double eyelids? It's kind of hard to explain, but I have two eyelids, but it's really thin...and when I close my eyes, it becomes one kinda...rounded eyelid.

If you ever get the chance/time to do one, that would be great.

(And if you're confused with what I'm trying to say, I would gladly take a picture)

    :)

  12. I really love this reviewww! and the unipallet looks like something i would actually invest in. I think it looks like a great way to organize everything. I have single shadows too and if I am carrying too much sometimes I would actually drop some and get all frustrated lol. so this pallet would come in handy for me to keep everything organized and in one place. I am really liking the white one. haha it matches my MacBook and DS hehehe. I will definitely check out their site and grab one for myself! if you do decide to make a vid of how you depot your shadows I will definitely check it out since I have never done that with mine.

  15. the nyx shadows look lovely in the uni palette, but I think I'm going to stick with my MAC palettes as I have a couple of them going now. How do you depot your nyx shadows? I have a bunch of them and like yours they were taking up space!

  16. NYX is such a godsend and now you can have them in such a convenient (and super cute) travel case! I never even knew these palettes existed...so pretty!

  18. LOVE this review! I didnt know they made empty palettes. I have a silly question though.. What are the thumb grips for? I was totally confused when you said you could have them on the right or left in case you're left or right handed. hehe Other than that, I think I will have to invest in a few =) Thanks Jen

  19. All the NYX shadows look absolutely stunning in the palettes!!! ^o^ I have to agree with you that they look so pretty diagonal as well! haha

  20. Quick question: How many MAC Shadows can you fit in a case? If you can fit at least 13, i'd seriously consider getting these because of the color-coding aspect and they look super sturdy. The problem with my MAC palettes (I have 4 of them) is that they're thin so they're easy to drop, and they don't hold the eyeshadows that securely. Two of the closing clasps have already broken for me too :(

Yes, the Unii palettes are a little more expensive, but they come with the mirror and look SUPER sturdy. I wouldn't be afraid to pack those in my bag, whereas I'm always freaking out about my MAC shadows and take smaller eye quads or trios instead.

  21. nicole: each unii can fit 13 MAC eyeshadows and still fit the thumb grip as well. Without the thumb grip you can fit 14. :)

tramtram27: the thumb grip is there so that when you are holding the case you won't lose grip or accidentally have your fingers dip into an eyeshadow. it's actually very handy in use.

  22. The palettes are really cute. Love the way u arranged them diagonally rather than the normal straight-up style. At the moment, i don't have that many colors, so i don't need it yet. But those casings sure have very interesting colors... u'll actually feel happier just by staring at them. Ok, this is how i enjoy the things i buy... hope i'm not the only one.

Jen, hope you & your friend are feeling better already. Stay positive ya.

    Love.

You are so smart, innovative and gorgeous!!! I got a question and I am sorry to ask, are u willing to tell ur height? coz i am a short asian girl of height around 154cm, and recently i am in love with a guy who is of height around 185cm. I feel so embarassing and thought my height is a huge turn off. So I will be very grateful if i can get some tips from you! thanks!!!!!!!

  25. hi jen!

I'm a newbie when it comes to make-up, but its definitely something i want to get into. I already have the MAC blacktrack fluidline and the liquidlast liner. However, I'm at a loss as to which eyeshadows to use. Can you recommend a few eye shadow must-haves for a newbie (brand and colour)?

    Thank you!
    Jennifer

  33. Hi Jen (and everyone else here). I was wondering, since you'd have these for a while, if you've had any issues with the integrity of the plastic in these palettes. I have read some reviews about the plastic cracking after only a few months of gentle use, especially around the snaps/hinges. Please comment. Cheers!

  34. Joan: I haven't personally had any problems with my palettes cracking but I will make an update if that does happen.

  35. Hi Jen,

This is a great review! I actually saw it on Unii's website before coming to your page. I think I'm going to get one for my boyfriend's mom as a Christmas gift--she's very into her make-up.

I really like your lipstick color in this video. Could you tell me what color and brand it's from?

    Take care,
    Amy
