Easy Loose Curls Tutorial

1:22 PM

If you've ever watched a Victoria's Secret commercial and wished you had the soft, wavy curls of the models but didn't know how to achieve that without looking *ahem* inappropriate, I wanted to show you an easy way to get those sexy, natural curls in about 10 minutes.

Today's tutorial is a very, very basic lesson on how I get loose, everyday curls that I frequently wear in my videos. There are many ways to curl hair including with a flat iron but I find that using a good old curling iron is the quickest and easiest method for me. Click on, dear readers, for the video!

PRODUCTS MENTIONED:

J. Crew watch strap bracelet (similar)
Starfish cuff via Hautelook (my invite)

ON ME:

Forever 21 tee (similar/similar/similar)
Forever 21 orange blazer (similar/similar/similar)
Amrita Singh necklace (similar/similar/reversible)

Here's a look at the back of my head. For those wondering, yes I had my hair ombre dyed last year which has all but grown out at this point. (I just got my hair cut and colored a couple days ago but you guys will get to see that soon. Don't worry, it's not crazy or interesting at all.)

You can see that the curls fall like loose waves in the back and changing the direction the curls are going helps to give more fullness and volume to the hair. The resulting curls are bouncy and touchable.

Really, I think the most important part of obtaining loose curls is using a larger barrel curling iron. The one I used for this tutorial is the Babyliss Pro 1.5" ceramic curling iron but I also have a Jilbere 1.25" curling iron from Sally Beauty that I love just as much. How cute is this breast cancer one in pink? Wish that had been there when I bought mine!

I hope that my tips helped you to get those beautiful everyday curls you've been dreaming about! Let me know in the comments if you have any other hair curling tips to share, or if you have any requests for future hair tutorials. Have a great weekend!

  2. This is a really helpful video. I used to curl my hair like this when I had long hair. Now I have short bob and I usually wear it straight, but I need to try with curling. I might make a blog post/video about that :)

  4. Nice video! I think half of what makes the look successful is starting with a good cut. Do you mind sharing with the readers just what you tell your stylist when it comes to getting your hair cut? Do your layers start at a certain point?

    1. I usually tell the hairstylist that I want layers all around starting near my ears and going to the ends. This was after not getting my hair cut for a good 6 months or so, so my layers have all grown out quite a bit. :)

It's really always easiest to show them a picture when getting a cut so they know exactly what you are looking for!

  6. I have naturally curly hair, and I know you've said in the past that you have a bit of wave in yours. What flat-iron do you use, if any?

I love your tutorials -- you're easily the best YouTube makeup and hair guru for achieving fun and natural looks that aren't just "60s" or "celebrity inspired" and the like. They're so easy to follow, even with my super hooded eyes.

    1. Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my tutorials! I have 2 flat irons. My 1" one is a GHD and I have a bigger 2 or 3" CHI for when I want to straighten hair fast. :)

  7. haha it's funny, it always seems like the grass is greener on the other side...those who have curly hair are always straightening (i.e. me) and those you have straight hair are always curling. :D

  8. wow! nice curls. But.. how long does the curl last? what hairspray do u use that makes this last longer but without making the hair look so crisp and wet?

    1. It usually lasts for 1.5 days or until I wash my hair. My hair takes curl pretty well, although when I was younger (prepubescent) it could never keep a curl.

Two hairsprays I recommend are Kenra and L'Oreal Elnett which both have a really nice flexible hold without being crunchy.

  28. Hey Jen :)
Great tutorial! Love the simplicity of achieving those curls.
By the way, are you ever going to do a video on an update on your ombre hair? I'm also Korean, (hi 언니 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ), and I was thinking about also ombre dying my hair sometime this summer, (bring in some browns to my very dark colored hair for the summertime :D). I LOVED your video on your ombre hair, and showing the before and after pics, and I was just wondering how things have been since? Would you ombre dye it again? I know you said you wouldn't have to retouch it as much as highlights, which it what is so appealing to me about this. Like I said, I'm really interested in getting it done, so I was wondering if doing this was really something you would suggest for other darker haired girls like myself, (for a more different look, and since it seems to give a lot more dimension with hairstyles).

Thank you Jen! Love being your subscriber :D You are always so genuine and sweet. :) xoxo <3

  39. This is a really great video. It has very informational tips. I am using Babyliss to curl my hair. It has great functions. It is one of the best curling ıron ın the market. Nice and light, heats up fast! I like that the cool tip stays cool even on the highest setting. I like that my arms dont hurt by the end of the styling session... I'm glad i bought it! I read great reviews about that on the http://www.beautilab.com/

  40. I have Sultra The Bombshell Rod Curling Iron . I love this styling tool. I can't imagine my life without it! :) It took me a few days to figure out what I was doing but that's because I was so used to straightening my hair--I had never really used a curing iron before. I have shoulder-length hair and have been growing it out for a few months now. I will admit, when my hair was a bit shorter (just above shoulders) it was kind if hard to use. You want to be able to wrap your hair around the tool at least two times. Three is better. I am just now able to do three time. I got great reviews from http://www.thebeautilab.com/best-curling-iron-reviews/ .
