Manicure Monday: Deborah Lippmann Lady Is A Tramp & Gel Lab

9:00 AM

Happy Manicure Monday everyone! Today I have a very classic color that I am quite smitten with: Lady Is A Tramp from Deborah Lippmann. Just like the perfect red lipstick, I believe there is a "perfect red" nail polish out there for everyone. You know, the one that makes hands look beautiful, sexy, elegant, and ladylike in a way that trendy shades just can't match. Having seen this on my friend Wendy and knowing we had a similar skintone, I had high hopes that this would be my perfect red too.

More info as well as Deborah Lippmann's Gel Lab Base & Top Coat after the jump!

My perfect red polish must be a true neutral red creme -- no significant warm or cool tones to alter the look of my skintone -- and also not be too dark or light. Lady Is A Tramp checks all those boxes as well as being easy to apply and opaque in 2 coats.

Here I tried out a new base & top coat, Deborah Lippmann's Gel Lab. One thing I learned back when I was studying industrial design is that it's always ideal to use base, paint, and top coat from the same brand because it's all formulated to work better and will make the varnish last longer with less issues. Granted we mainly used spray paints then, but I believe the same generally holds true for all types of lacquers.

You may have picked up from my past Mani Mondays that I'm a very loyal lover of Seche Vite top coat, but having just been sent this duo (Very excitedly I might add. Omg.) I wanted to test it out and see if it lived up to my very high standards.

The Gel Lab Base Coat went on as usual, then I applied 3 coats of Lady Is A Tramp although 2 would have been sufficient. The directions say to wait 1 minute between each coat so after that I applied the Gel Lab Top Coat. It went on thinner than Seche Vite but the really impressive quality was how shiny my nails were. Even without a really thick layer my nails are so shiny without any tip shrinkage! The shine has been lasting for days now and I had 0 problems with nail dents. I usually hate most top coats so that's really saying a lot. The set retails for $45 so I'd expect this to be as impressive as their polishes, and I'm happy to report that it is. :)

Overall, I am totally impressed to have found my new favorite red polish as well as a fabulous base & top coat set that I will keep trying out so I can report back on how they wear over time.

Readers, what are your go-to base & top coats? What's your own "perfect red" nail polish? Let me know in the comments!

  5. I really like using the Revlon Colorstay base and top coat, especially when I use the same line of nail polish colors. So far, my go to red is Revlon's Velvet Rope, but I'm still looking for "the one."

  12. Dear Jen, thanks for the post!

I love your Manicure Mondays and I love this nail color! I just had the color on until yesterday, too :-) I'm not sure about what others think but I personally found the formula not as easy to work with for some reason. It's a gorgeous color nonetheless! And very pigmented. Have you tried Essie's Really Red? It's a lighter red than DL's Lady Is A Tramp, but it's a gorgeous true red color. I absolutely love it and it's been my HG red color polish. I hope you try it!

Also, I was wondering if you can share (maybe a video tutorial? :D) how you care your nails and how you apply nail polishes. Your nails always look perfect and so clean!

    Thank you so much!

  14. Hi Jen!

Could you do a tutorial on how you trim and shape your nails to such perfection? Your Manicure Monday series posts are awesome! But getting good polishes is one thing, having nice nails to start with is crucial! So yep!
