Manicure Monday: Covergirl XL Nail Gel in Plumped-Up Plum

9:00 AM

Hey guys! Today I'm super excited to share with you a nail color that has been a big obsession of mine over the last week. There's something about lavender polish that I find really pops on the nails (like in my latest Lookbook) but melts into my skintone, and it's just a touch more saturated than spring pastels which is totally perfect for the current summer season. Presenting Covergirl XL Nail Gel in Plumped-Up Plum.

Was the wear as nice as the look? Let's check it out below!

Plumped-up Plum is my first foray into the Covergirl XL nail polish line which is their version of the very trendy "gel style" polishes which have been everywhere lately. The difference comes in a... how should I describe this... squishier texture? This causes the polish to apply thicker with a glossier finish with each coat giving the look of gel nails.

I recently mentioned one of these updated gel formulas with the last NARS polish I previously posted about but honestly I liked the formula of the XL nail gel, dare I say, better! (Yup, I did just admit I'm liking the formula of this drugstore polish better than a department store one.)

The wear was awesome, the polish itself dried quickly, and was perfect in just 2 coats. Here I used the Butter London Nail 999 base and top coat set to seal in the look.

Because I loved Plumped-Up Plum so much, I am definitely going to be checking out the other shades in this collection. SO excited to jump into more summer brights!

Readers, have you tried XL or any of the newer gel-effect polishes? Do you have a favorite summer shade? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I always look forward to your nail posts! I am such a sucker for purple that this instantly caught my eye in my newsfeed. I've never tried Covergirl polishes before but I definitely will now. That color and from what I hear, the formula, are all to promising and I'm pretty sure I saw a coupon for their polishes in the Sunday paper..hehe >.<

  5. Hi Jen! What do you do to prevent your nails from becoming stained or yellow? I am also obsessed with nail polish and like to change them every week, but after a while, my nails start to become yellow. :( I always apply one or two coats of base coat before applying color, but that doesn't seem to solve my problem. What would you recommend?

    1. I haven't had too bad of a staining problem (my usual base coat is OPI Nail Envy which works for me) but certain colors will inevitably stain like saturated reds and greens. You can always try rubbing lemon on your nails (5+ minutes, then make sure you wash off and moisturize well) or try out a hydrogen+peroxide baking soda paste. If you have whitening toothpaste that's another option to test out. :) Hope that helps!
