OOTD: Suspender Tights

11:10 AM

Hello everyone! I hope you are seeing clearer skies than I am at the moment. We are stuck in some drizzly, druzzly, freezing rain/snow/sleet action and once again I am using my previously recorded photos and videos to live vicariously through my prior experiences. Warm and happy forever, I say!

Because of this glorious excuse, I am posting an outfit of the day from when we had a few short days of Spring preview weather. I'm quite sick of winter so as soon as it hit the 70's, my House of Holland suspender tights flew onto my legs (Literally, they flew across the room onto my legs. You should've seen it.) and I flew across my living room to set up my new tripod. See? I'm getting better! I finally used a tripod to record an "outfit of the day". *curtsy*

If you follow me on Twitter, you will know that the day I actually wore this outfit I had on my black Theory Gratti blazer which is a cuter, more cropped fit than what I'm wearing in this video but it's currently at the tailors being altered. As I rarely wear any outfit more than once, I wanted to record this outfit concept before it flew (Again? What's with all the flying?) out of my mind completely so please forgive the slouchy boyfriend-ish fit here!

 BCX blazer in XS
Pink blouse from Marshall's in S (similar here and here)
Mossimo white tank from Target in XS
Forever 21 dress shorts in XS (similar here)
Nine West peep-toe booties in 4 (nearly identical from Nine West here)
Silver rings from ebay and double-knuckle ring by Erica Anenberg

So there's also a bit of a story about this outfit. I was obviously feeling a bit self-conscious because I tend to be pretty conservative and not wear anything this risqué to work although I work in a creative department that can "get away" with wearing more fashiony or casual wear. On my way to lunch, I passed one of the directors who I saw give me an eye and then the Vice President of my department walked past as well while I was going up the stairs. Inside I was like OH NO DID I WEAR THE WRONG THING but shrugged it off and got in line for my food.

A couple minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder from the VP.

He stopped me and said, "Can I just say--thank you. THANK YOU! You look fabulous today. Thank you. Thank you."

Needless to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed and flustered and flattered and had a big grin on my face for the next two hours. XD He even went to my manager and talked about my outfit and that he probably embarrassed me. Eeeeeeeeeee~

A couple more just 'cause. Here I am showcasing my grump face. I was having camera troubles. Lol.

And an example of why remotes are way better than camera timers, especially when you can only find the 2-second setting. MEGA FAIL!

Anyway, I hope you guys have a lovely day filled with people giving you lots of compliments that you can accept a little more gracefully than I was able to. Hermmm. Ahem. >_<

  6. Super cute!! Love this outfit and that's awesome that the VP was so complimentary!

I actually had a coworker tell me he liked my outfit then typed: LOL! Cracked me up!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh no! He typed (in brackets, which is apparently illegal in blogger comments! boohoo!): "rawr"

  8. The suspender tights are so... sultry!! That would totally make my day if someone (anyone) haha said that about an outfit in person.

  9. Haha that's a cute story and a cute cute outfit! I love House of Holland suspender tights! :D

  10. The tights seem to be sold out from ASOS, but they're also available at urban outfitters: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=19152917&CAWELAID=724094586#BVRRWidgetID

  11. I would definitely wear this outfit out on the town, to dinner, to a party. In fact, I own a similar version from Topshop. However, I would not wear it work or any other professional environment - I'm very surprised that you did. Wearing garter-like tights is not work appropriate for most companies.

  15. I've gotta agree with your VP. that outfit is simply AWESOME.

  16. Hawt!! You always put together a great outfit. Also, the second to last pic with your "grump face" (which is super cute btw) looks like you're leaning against a pole. =P I had to look at it a couple times to see that it was just your mirror/wall LOL.

  17. The only times I've sene suspender tights is on VS models lol. It looks nice on you know. Where do you work again?

  18. Adorable outfit.

I am no prude, but unless you're in trendy/fashion-oriented/casual industry, the outfit is unprofessional and as such may not hinder your advancement.

  19. Wow, I love this outfit! Every piece is amazing - from the blazer to the shirt to the suspenders. I would never be able to pull off this outfit, but you definitely wear it well :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ow OW! Hot! I know what you mean about the dress code for creative departments. We have an art/animation team at work and they often come to work in t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Erica: Trust me, there were no concerns there. The complimenters um... don't swing that way. It was a very fashion-based compliment. ;)

Anonymous: Yes, I do work in a fashion-related environment, in the creative department so we have quite a lot of freedom with what we wear. It's definitely not "business" dress.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love this outfit, Jen!! BUT I have to agree that the garter-like embellishment would make it inappropriate for work pretty much everywhere except for a fashion magazine - and they might not even be okay with it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. it's super cool! :)
and i love how well-proportioned your body is despite being a petite <3

    ReplyDelete
  24. I looove the outfit! Those tights are so fun!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I disagree. While those tights are smoking HOT and do look sexy on you, it is inappropriate to wear them outdoors especially to work. I'm surprised you didn't get sent home to change. Those tights are better off worn at home behind closed doors and should strictly be only for your husband's eyes only. I could not wear those in public, they just look too hooker-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Very, very daring ;) I love statement pieces and those tights are just absolutely ADORABLE!This ootd is by far my favorite one that you've posted, teehee.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It is a cute outfit, but I have to say I was shocked you (or anyone) would wear that to work. It's enviable that you have that kind of freedom, though!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with Jemn and a couple others with similar comments. They do look fantastic on you and I love that top and the blazer on you, but those tights with the shorts (even though they're 'loose' and not as tight) make it look like you're a stripper. or a hooker.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cool outfit! But I'm surprised you were able to wear it to work, even if it was a fashion/creative environment. I think the most lenient dress code I've seen were mohawks, tattoos, tshirts, flip flops, and a hat.

    ReplyDelete
  30. those are so cute! makes the outfit look super badass matched with the blazer. ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  31. love the look, love the tights, really love the lace shirt. but yeah, if only we all enjoyed the fashion freedom that you do @ work. someone mentioned the tights were sold out at ASOS, they can be picked up from MyTights.com also (http://www.mytights.com/us/brand/henry-holland.html)
keep it up Jenn, love to visit your blog, you have so many great ideas!

    ReplyDelete
  32. i think that people are commenting that this is too risqué for day time and work because you've got a lot of black going on. i think that suspender tights can look more day appropriate when paired with a light floral dress and w/out too much of that sheer part showing... so maybe have a hem that *just* grazes the opaque area of the tights. this way, you get little peeks when you walk but it isn't like BAM! GARTERS!.... maybe add a belt to the dress and a cute cardigan. heels can also add to the risque look, so maybe opt for flats instead - anything from cute ballet flats, slouchy boots or a military style boot would look adorable!

at the end of the day, you know your company's dress code best and what things make you feel like a million bucks so that's all that matters :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. hmmm...just curious, but what do you ladies think of over knee socks, less risque, or about the same?

    ReplyDelete
  34. first time commenter:

You look beautiful! It's enviable how confident you are to be able to wear something that is so outside most people's comfort zone! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jen, I love your tights, haha. I'd never wear them, but I love them just the same <333

LOL at your mega fail picture xD It's awesome!

P.S. Big Bang came back!!!!!!!!!!!! Their album is on iTunes and was number 10 for total album sales last time i checked!

Can you do a tutorial on them? haha JK xD

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sorry but your legs are way to skinny to carry that look off, it kinda just looks a bit wierd

    ReplyDelete
  37. Those tights would definitely be inappropriate for a more formal business environment, but since Jen works in a fashion-related field, I find them rather fitting.

I actually prefer the outfit without the blazer. :P

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree, maybe the blazer is a bit off balance with the rest of the outfit, reason why this other person thinks he legs look too skinny - its just proportions :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. This outfit is cute but I'd say it's a tad bit inappropriate for a professional work environment even if it is in a creative industry--not because of the tights--but because the shorts are really short and the top of the tights accentuates that area. If they were maybe another two inches longer, it would have been perfect and shouldn't have received any negative comments or thoughts. It would be okay to wear the same length shorts with opaque tights, though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. you look so badass with those tights! It looks like you should be in an sexy action movie :)I would feel so flattered as well if my "VP" was to compliment my outfit! lol

  41. I love your sense of style! How do you find such stylish shoes in size 4 without totally overspending? I'm a size 4 too and it's almost impossible to find a good selection in the U.S. I'd appreciate any tips you've got! Thanks! :)

  43. Anonymous: I stalk Nordstrom's size 4 shoe section pretty regularly so if I see something I like, I can either wait for a good price or save up to splurge. There's so few choices, it makes it easier to decide if it's really LOVE or something to let go. :)

  45. Its a sexy outfit for a night out and you look wonderful, but absolutely inappropriate to wear at work. I can't believe your husband let you do that. How about you wear that to your parents house and see what they think??? And the men commenting positively...I mean come on they are men and you're practically wearing short shorts that's revealing and garter like tights for their imagination. What men won't like that. Kinda naive to take it positively from them. If it was that fantastic and stylish for your VP to comment like that, what about some of the other FEMALE coworkers or upper head mgmt, did they? I'm not saying this to be negative or out of jealousy. For those that are saying "oh thats so wonderful Jen", obviously they're gonna say that because they're not family and is not out there for your best interest.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'd have to agree with others who are not digging this outfit for work. I think it's great for a sexy night out but definitely not for work. I have always worked for companies in which you can wear whatever you want but I think an outfit like this to work just puts out the wrong message even if that's not your intention.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wish I had that body to pull off the outfit!
I'm not sure about wearing it to the office though, I could be too self conscious to do so

    ReplyDelete
  48. i cannot belive how many people have been rude or just insensitive about why someone would choose to wear these to work.

i own these tights. i wear them to school. it's ridiculous and judgemental to criticise someone for doing something like wearing a nice pair of TIGHTS in a way that is so negative.

Jen regularly brightens my day through her blog, and chooses to share things from her life with us. if you cant be a respectful reader, then don't comment. no one is exactly in a position to judge...

    ReplyDelete
  49. love the outfit you mentioned everything but your purse. where did you get it? love it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love those tights! They are so sexy (: I didn't know Nine West made boots in size 4! Is that a typo?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love that outfit, I wish I were able to pull that off. I'm glad that you could, and now those tights on Asos are sold out!

and LOL at those who didn't "approve" of the tights and posted under "Anonymous." That just really bothers me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You look stunning!

Do these tights bunch at the ankles? I noticed they were one size only and lots of petites were complaining about the extra material that scrunched up around the ankles after wearing them for just a few minutes. Would love to hear your take!

    Btw, how tall are you?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I thought I left a comment... mayhaps not?

    Anyway, you look stunning!!

Do these tights bunch around the ankles? I saw that they're one size only and quite a few petites have commented (on Urban Outfitters) that the tights simply didn't work for them as they were too long and bunched at the ankles after only about 5 minutes of wear.

What's your take? And how tall are you, if you don't mind my asking?

Again, very sexy outfit. You don't look like a hooker or a stripper (quite harsh). Besides, everyone knows hookers don't wear blazers! yeesh. LOL jk. You look adorb though, I want those tights!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Proudly Petite: I am 4'10.5" and yes, they do bunch at the ankles for me! They are just made wider than other tights in my opinion. I'm going to try washing it in a garment bag to see if it will make them skinnier in width. I have the House of Holland Chain Suspender tights and they fit perfectly so I think it's just this style.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Now those suspender tights are really, really alluring, and I really want to get my hands on a pair, but I really have to wonder why your VP had to *THANK YOU* several times and then gush to your manager about it. Seems kind of strange, no?

But seriously, this is the greatest outfit.

    Just really, really awesome.

  56. I love this look. I'm new to your blog, but am SO EXCITED I found it! I actually came to your blog by looking for YouTube videos on how to do makeup for monolid eyes. I want to play with my friends and do their eyes too XD.

Anyway, your clothes look awesome. I'm annoyed to see people talking about how either your boss or your husband (wuut?) should have gotten you to change. No one's body but your own! And you are doing it so very well! Congrats on the complement!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I went to the website to buy the suspender tights and the website said that they don't ship to the U.S.! :( I'm soooo sad is that the same website you brought it from?? I really want them! They looks sooooo amazing on you! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. love the tights but the site linked here says they don't ship to USA, know any other vendors?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hi Jen!

What flat / no heel shoes would you pair with these tights? I was thinking oxfords because normal black flats seems to make it look not as... cool? Haha not sure what the word I'm looking for is!! But yeah! Thanks <3
