Makeup For Uneven Eyelids

11:53 AM

Today I have a tutorial for what I lovingly call "wonk eye" aka when your eyes go like this: O_o

I'm sure I'm not the only one who deals with this but lately I have had uneven eyelids on a pretty regular basis. For those of you who haven't experienced this before, uneven eyelids can happen to people of any ethnicity although I won't lie, it is SUPER common among those of us with Asian eyelid types. (I say types because people can have many types of eyelids for example, I have several Caucasian friends who happen to have a flatter eyelid shape with small creases which is common among Asians.)

I personally can get them from crying, allergies, being sick, not getting enough sleep or getting too much sleep, rubbing my eyes, or sometimes I just wake up with them in the morning with no explanation. Every morning is an exciting opportunity for a different eye shape! Haha.

Tired of going makeupless or being frustrated when you suffer from Wonk Eye®? Here's my technique for eye makeup on uneven eyes!

Products mentioned:
IPKN It lipgloss in Lilac (thank you Pretty & Cute for this lipgloss!)

Just in general, the most important, irreplaceable items needed for successfully doing this look is:

1. Use an eyeshadow primer. This is imperative for uneven lids because creased lids can transfer shadow color unless you have a really good base. My favorite is Urban Decay Primer Potion.

2. Use a cream or gel-type eyeliner like MAC Fluidline, Wet & Wild Mega Eyes Cream Eyeliner, or Lioele All-in-One Gel Eyeliner. Cream liners are more waterproof than pencil liners, won't peel or flake like some liquid liners, and can give a soft or hard line depending on application so the versatility is perfect for those with monolids or uneven eyelids.

3. Lash curler and waterproof mascara. This will also keep your makeup from smudging and will hold a curl for eyelashes that naturally may point in different directions. Large creased eyes tend to have lashes that point out or up while hooded eyelids and monolids often have lashes that point downward. Not all waterproof mascaras are equal so go for drier formulas like Covergirl LashBlast Waterproof, Shiseido Lasting Lift, or Fairydrops Platinum Waterproof mascaras.

Here is the look on me. If you look closely you can see the more defined line of my crease on the right and softer line on the left mimicking the creased arch shadow shape.

With my eyes down they look almost the same except the creased side is a bit more softer. This is to look less harsh when that eye is open. They are still pretty close so it's not very noticeable in real life.

Here's a close-up of my eyes for a better look.

Instead of a dark brown, you could also use a metallic gunmetal, the duochrome gold/brown from the Comfort Zone palette, copper, or really any other medium-to-dark eyeshadow that you prefer but I do find that light colors tend to be less effective. Multi-dimensional shadows are perfect since it's a 1-shadow look and shimmery or duochromey colors really add a look of extra effort without the extra time.

I hope you guys found this tutorial practical, helpful, or even just plain informative. If you have had any experience with uneven eyelids, please share your experience or tips as well in the comments!

Happy Labor Day weekend!

  1. Oh my gosh, Jen, thank you so much for sharing this. My eyes are always in a constant battle against me with uneven eyelids -I always have a prominent crease on one eye, and the other eye just rolls over.

I love your posts and your videos (my first comment on your blog ever :P) Totally going to try out this look sometime! Keep up the wonderful posts :)

  2. I thought I was the only person struggling with this until I read your post! Thanks for sharing! :) Eyeliner do make a huge difference. Although gel liners can be a pain in the ass to use (bcoz it takes quite a bit of time to put on), it is the most effective. I've tried it all- pencils and liquids... It doesn't work as well as gel liners. Thank you for this! I know m not an alien with weird eye lids anymore :D

  4. waaah I was just about to sleep when I spot your new post! and yeaah, thanks for the post, so helpful! I have this 'uneven eyelids' problem too! my right eye is smaller than the left cuz the crease appear and dissapear on its onw. I have this kind of look on my face: O_o

  5. I battle the O_o eyes by wearing fake glasses & praying no one notices how wonky my eyes were because I normally don't wear solid dark e/s's on my lids but I'll need to try this next time.

  6. An excellent post! I had wonk eye as a child, but it fixed itself - but my right eye is still slightly smaller than the left!

  7. This a great post thank you. I have uneven eyelids and when I line and apply eyeshadow I definitely need to watch for balance. If I try to do the exact same thing on both eyes they might look wonky. I have to be especially careful if I want a dramatic eyeliner look on the upper and lower eyelids. If I'm not careful it can accentuate my uneven eye shape even more.

  13. I'm curious about your pencil brush as well. It looks both soft and dense.

Would you consider doing a post or video on your top eye makeup brushes?
(I'm also interested in a eye makeup tutorial using Josie Maran's My Favorite Argan Powders. I think a lot of your subscribers/followers/readers purchased the palette after your great review!)

  15. Thank you so much for this, Jen, the info and the video - I always thought I was the only (Asian) person in the world suffering from uneven eyelids! That's a great tutorial and really, really helpful. :)

  16. Wowza! Thank you so much for bringing this up! I never thought anyone else had this problem except me. :) I get sooo annoyed on the days when I wake up with wonk eye. There was a time when my eyes seemed *permanently* wonky, and I wouldn't wear makeup because I couldn't figure out how to make it look even.

This is truly a unique post... thanks!

  21. I'm a bit surprised that a lot of people seem to have uneven eyelids (from reading previous comments). I tried so hard to fix it using double eyelid glue but it doesn't seem to work so I gave up. lol My next step is to learn to even it out with eyeliner so I'm very thankful that you came up with this tutorial. ^^

THANK YOU so much for this. i hate my uneven eyes and i've always wanted to get eyelid surgery to fix this but this tutorial really helped me and i'm so glad there are other people out there who have the same situation as me. ive been using the eyelid tape but i hate it because i feel like its very noticeable with makeup ):

  25. This is a great tutorial! t will come in very handy on those days where I'm running late to work AND I woke up with uneven lids!

QUESTION - Which camera / camcorder do you use? The colors and the quality comes out really good! I'd been trying to take a before and after picture of my makeup but the color never comes out right.

  26. Great tutorial! The uneven lids are a definite problem for a lot of Asian women. I usually recommend a dark shadow as well to my friends who have that issue, but didn't think of suggesting the pointed definer brush as well. Great tip!

  38. Hi Jen! I am a huge fan of yours. I have monolids and have worn liquid eyeliner and tons of mascara every day for 10 years, but I could never figure out eyeshadow. As I'm starting to get older, I'm realizing that my eyeliner/mascara routine does make my eyes stand out, but it kind of looks like I'm not made up at all. I've tried simpler variations of your everyday taupe eyes and your drugstore makeup look (LOVE LOVE LOVE this one!! I love the 510 electrified shadow!) and I'm starting to accumulate tons of shadows and brushes and I'm experimenting almost every day. THANK YOU!!

Anyway, I am commenting on this post because I definitely know that waterproof mascaras dry quicker and hold the curl, but for some reason every single Cover Girl mascara I've tried just does not work for me. My lashes get flattened out immediately. I used to love L'oreal Le Grand Curl, but that got discontinued... so I moved on to Maybelline Sky High Curves, which also got discontinued (bummerrrrrssss) and after going through almost every drugstore brand, I settled on Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous. I'm on, like, my 10th tube of it. I'm not totally in love with it like I was with Le Grand Curl, but it's the closest I've found so far.

I'm wondering if you have any idea why Cover Girl mascaras don't seem to dry quickly for me?? I've tried many different mascaras by CG and every single one flattens my lashes immediately. Maybe it's the difference in climate?? I live in Boston.

Anyway... thank you SO MUCH for your videos and I constantly can't wait for your next one. I'm in a wedding in May and I so wish I could hire you to do my makeup!!! but I doubt the bride will agree to flying you out here. Hehe. Please post if you're ever going to be in the Boston area and I will totally hire you for a private consultation...!!! I would die!

I'M SUCH A FAN!!!!!!!! Ok I sound crazy stalker now. Sorry. Thanks again for all your amazing stuff!!!

  39. Hi Jen! I'm a fairly new fan of yours and I was just looking through you blogs (btw, I really do love all of your posts and you're so beautiful!)

This post in particular really caught my attention. I know that it's about make-up and evening out your eyes, but to me, showing and acknowledging something that basic was great.

I have a friend, who I think is pretty the way she is, who has chosen to undergo double eyelid surgery in order to obtain what society tells us beauty is. But all of your tutorials (i.e. smokey eye for monolids and this tutorial) are so great because your really giving women/girls who have issues with their monolids or uneven eyelids solutions that would allow them to be happy with the way they look or even non-surgical solutions.

So for real, keep doing what your doing! Thank you, Jen!! :)

  41. I have HORRID wonk eye...like all the way up to and including the eyebrow. I hit my eyebrow on some monkey bars as a kid (HARD) and damaged the muscle. I have one super monolid and one double lid and was so grateful for this post. I already do a lot of this but there were some tips in here that really helped out. Thank you so much!

  42. Droopy eyelids are my family's genetic reality, starting in our 30s. I had a spendy laser treatment (temporary, but worked) then I started using the Made from Earth Vitamin Firming Serum just before the next treatment. The bottle of that works as well as a $1000+ laser treatment? Now I buy 2 bottles of the Vitamin Firming Serum and just a tiny dab on each eyelid, every am & pm, does the trick. About 3 weeks after first use the change was obvious, even to my husband.
