Boxer Girl Bruised Eye Halloween Tutorial

Hello everyone! With only a few days left until Halloween weekend is officially here, I wanted to do a tutorial that most of you could easily pull together last-minute. Today's look is on a boxer girl, which is an idea I came up with 3 years ago because I wanted to do something non-traditional that wasn't soley about being "sexy". I knew there would be plenty of Disney princesses and sexy creatures about, so why not do something a bit more man-repelling? ;)

Here it is folks, how to give yourself a (fake) black eye for a convincing boxer girl costume!

Products mentioned:
Makeup Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation in 40
MAC Select Coverup Concealer in NC30
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Palette (Junkshow, Blackout)
Milani Liquif'eye Pencil in Black
Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil in Yeyo
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Waterproof mascara
NYX lashes in 113
Eyeko Graffiti Eyeliner Pen in Black (current version here)
77 Eyeshadow Palette (no brand)
Sugarpill Eyeshadow in Buttercupcake
Wet & Wild Color Icon blush in Pearlescent Pink
MAC Lipglass in Revenge is Sweet (limited edition but I heard this looks similar)
Tarte Smooth Operator Powder

The brushes used in this tutorial were Sigma Make Me Cool brushes which you can browse here.

And here are some pics of the look:

I felt like Two-Face from Batman. This is my better half. XD

Real girl power! RAWR!

And I added this just because it's hilariously deceptive. Muahaha!

This is so I can freak more people out, unawares. A whole story in only a few pictures. :D

I hope you guys enjoyed seeing something a bit different for Halloween tutorials! If you'd like to see my full costume back when I did this look originally you can find it here. Some people asked me if I really got hurt so I'd say the costume was a success!

I do want to mention, just because it inevitably came up on youtube comments, that this look in no way is trying to glamorize abusive relationships and violence toward women. On the contrary, I feel that the idea of the boxing girl costume is empowering because girls can be proud of themselves even if they aren't trying to be sexy. As I wrote in the Youtube annotations, people dress like vampires for Halloween but don't actually eat people in real life. Don't take it to seriously because, after all, it is just a costume. If we know right from wrong and empower ourselves with that knowledge, we can always use makeup to have a bit of fun. :)

Have fun trying out the look and let me know in the comments what you think! I'll have one last smokey eye tutorial to post before the big day that will work for any costume, so you can look forward to that soon. Until next time~

  1. OMG Jen that's awesome! I'd have to be careful with this one my husband boxes and people will think we fought LOL!

  2. Wow the makeup you did looks amazing! great job!

  3. This was brilliant! ^___^ Awesome job Jen! Always love your tutorials. I don't think you have one I dislike in the least! <3

  4. Terrifying looking. Good thing it's just makeup xD

  5. What a easy & clever way to do! :) Your "better half" is so pretty!

  6. I think it's very rare that people pull off creating YouTube videos (especially makeup tutorials) that elicit such strong and true emotions with the abusive comments. I like this because it's taking a risk and not playing it safe.

  7. Amazing. I love the multi bruisey color!

  8. How can you look so pretty all bruised up!

  9. the bruises looks real! I love your halloween style

  10. amazing make up !!

  11. That looks pretty convincing. Good job.

  12. Great idea for a change. Love a fierce girl!

  13. hey there (; Can you please please please do a makeup tutorial on a neutral/everyday using the only urban decay naked palette? I just got mine (I'm slow i know) and want to know more ways I can use the different shades!

  14. that looks too realistic :D Well done!

  15. looks sooo good! may have to do a "battered wife" look soon lol

  16. You look so pretty even with a black eye ;)

  17. I love this look and the fact that it is not the "norm" costume idea. I think you look gorgeous and it does look very realistic. I may have to try this out next year =)

  18. Great tutorial! Even with a bruised eye, you are still gorgeous! lol. Happy Halloween!

  19. OMG, Looks so Real!! btw makeup is fantastic!

  20. omg i totally love it.
    looks ao damn real. :O

i love your blog btw ^^

  21. Amazing job!!! Very out of the usual for a halloween costume and makeup!!!

  22. As long as it's obvious you are a boxer (the mitts and the outfit) then the black eye is perfectly fine if you ask me, it shows you fight.

If someone ran around doing this tut without the boxer story and instead did an apron or something now THAT would offensive and worthy of scorn.

  23. Oh you know what, I don't know if you read these comments but I was reading your YT comments after I posted here and I saw a lot of people saying you looked too skinny or something. I think it would be cool if you did an article on "reverse retouching". Magazines and ads always hire skinny models, but they air brush away their bones and other things that are natural because they are skinny. Because you are skinny we can see your sternum and ribs but what most people don't know is that that is NORMAL for skinny people! So they say you are unhealthy but in reality they just don't see it cause it's always photoshopped out! Here is a great article you can look at

"We've become conditioned to expect perfected images of skinny, apparently boneless, smooth little girls in our magazines."

If those people realized that the way you look is normal for skinnier people maybe they should shush up and reflect on how pervasive PS is, it's not just to make larger people look smaller it's to make people look fake period.

  24. Thanks for the Halloween tutorial! I'm actually using your lion one this year (my entire MA class is going as the Wizard of Oz cast!)

  25. it's pretty and not pretty^^ ouch
    you are so great!!!!^_^!!!

  26. you are totally brilliant, jen. If you don't mind, why don't you share about your experience in LOUIS VUITTON paris.

  28. you are super cute! I love watching your videos :)

  29. lol that's quite beautiful actually.. : ) I didn't know there would be yellow tones in bruises.

  30. wow taht looks great!!
    kisses from germay

  31. wow people need to chill out on yt. lol

    this is great!

idea: stuff something in your cheek to make it look like you got hit in the jaw too : )

  32. awesome!!!! love ur blog... so many good tips on makeup.

btw check out my petite feet shoe giveaway on the blog, some amazing calf leather shoes as prize!!!

    xoxo jenna

  33. I don't know if it's just me or what. That doesn't look like bruise to me. :( I like your makeup tutorial for the other eye though. I miss your more wearable makeup tutorials! Can you do one for Fall/Winter??

  34. This looks great, Jen! I love that this is sort of an artistic version of the bruise makeup, and the hints of yellow are amazing.

Also, unrelated, but are you still planning to review the Fairy Drops Candy Bar BB Cream you mentioned a few months ago? Ever since I saw your (I think it was July?) favourites video, I've been wanting to hear more about this product, but there aren't that many reviews of it online. Would love to hear a followup from you!

  35. Looks so crazy realistic!! lol. I really loved the intro as well! :D

  36. This tutorial is awesome. I did out of the blue last year (wayy after Halloween, so I could gauge how realistic it looked) and went to my mixed martial arts class. So many people came up to me and asked if I had actually gotten hit during sparring!

Keep doing what you're doing, Jen. You're amazing with makeup, and even more so for sharing your knowledge with us. :)

  37. Hello !
I viewed the Boxer Girl Bruised Eye Halloween Tutorial that was really amazing with the products
I would like to follow this!
    Awesome as like as
