Manicure Monday: Layla Hologram Effect Polish - Misty Blush

8:00 AM

For today's Manicure Monday I wanted to share with you a new polish I recently purchased, Laya Holograph Effect Nail Polish in 15 Misty Blush. As some of you know, holographic finish polishes are ones that have a rainbow effect on the nail and have a shimmery effect like glitter but without the roughness or difficulty of removal.

What was that you said? Glittery but not a pain in the butt to remove? Yes indeed! This happens to be why holographic polishes are my favorite polish finish.

first discovered holo polishes in January 2009 and have been completely hooked ever since. China Glaze's OMG and Kaleidoscope collections had ignited my heart's desire for rainbows and you guys already know how much I adore rainbows. You know what's so fun about blogging? I actually got to look back at exactly when my first holo polish experience was which I think is pretty rad. ;)

This is actually my first experience with Layla polishes but I was very impressed with their selection of holographic polish colors as well as their line of magnetic polishes. The high price of $15 kept me hesitant to try them out, but as my luck would have it Hautelook had a Layla sale and I went a bit crazy! All in the name of blogging, right husband? ;) Should you want to snatch them up the next time a sale hits, here's my invite.

I was first drawn to Misty Blush because it's similar to the purple-grey coloring of last year's popular Chanel Paradoxical polish, but with a linera holographic rainbow twist. It's actually fairly muted and work-appropriate from a distance with just a glow of holo effect which makes it so special.

I used a base of CND Stickey Base and 3 coats of Layla Misty Blush. The first coat applies thinly and can be streaky, but any weird bare patches were covered by the second or third coat. Each coat dries quickly which I find to be the case with all holos.

Top coat sometimes does funny things to mute the holographic look of holo polishes and this is the case here, although I did still use Seche Vite to extend the longevity of the polish on my nails.

This polish dries to a matte finish on its own and the thinner formula does nothing to hide ridges in nails, so it's a good idea to buff them down before polish application. I do want to mention that each Layla Hologram polish comes with its own nail buffing file which you are recommended to use beforehand but I didn't use it since buffing tends to weaken nails. I may next time just to see if it enhances the holo effect.

It was super difficult to catch the awesomeness that is holographic polish on camera, but I hope you guys are enjoying Manicure Monday!

Have you ever tried holographic nail polish? What's your favorite polish finish? Let me know in the comments!

  2. My lemming is China Glaze DV8 but I haven't had any luck finding it this year! Nothing seems to compare with it, but I've got myself OPI DS extravagance, indulgence and diamond, although I don't think their holos are as awesome.

    1. My nails aren't really in great condition. I have peeling issues and always have ridges, although lately they have been better. If you have thin or peeling nails you can try massaging cuticle oil on them every night because it should help stimulate growth. Also, when you wash dishes always use gloves!

  11. Oooohhh holographic polish!!! I have to check our stores for it though (I live in the Philippines). The one you're wearing is really nice and subtle but super pretty. And thanks for letting us know that it's easy to remove, that's my issue with glitter polish. Can you talk about your base coat? I haven't heard of that brand except from you. :D Thanks!
