How To Enhance Monolid Eyes!

Hey guys! Today's look is a makeup tutorial that is actually quite similar to my last tutorial on Makeup for Glasses. I've been on a big monolid kick lately and have been getting more and more requests for more basic looks for those with single eyelids (aka eyelids without a crease) so I thought it would be perfect to show my favorite way to enhance monolids.
Those of you with monolids (no crease) or hooded lids (small crease that looks monolid when eyes are open) know how frustrating and tricky it can be to apply shadows, mascara, and liner to monolids since most of the "fun" part of makeup gets tucked underneath while this constant rubbing causes makeup to run.
This look allows a bit of fun with color while elongating the eyes to make them appear larger and more dramatic. It's also a rather smudge-proof look that is comparatively long-lasting. Check out the video below!

The final look has an elongated almond shape on the lid which shows off the shadow color while eyes are both open and closed.
Here is a close-up of the eye. The flared half-lashes blend in harmoniously without causing any creasing and when done correctly looks quite natural. Monolidders actually have the benefit of the lashes being under the lid so the lash line isn't as noticeable! Just choose a style that has a strong band so the lashes don't droop down and cover the eyes.
The reflective satin finish of the purple shade creates an illusion of depth in contrast to the dark contour shadow and matte inner-corner highlight.
In the above photo you can see a small crease on the left while the right is a true monolid. This look works for both hooded lids and monolids but if you'd like to see a look specific to uneven eyelids, check out my tutorial for that as well!
Below you may notice the lid with the small crease (left) hides most of the shadow when I smile but it still shows enough to make the eyes look larger and more defined. Although this amount of shadow may be intimidating for some, it actually comes across as being quite flattering and dynamic in real life since much of the shadow is hidden when eyes are open but with every blink you can see the beautiful color.
If you are having trouble finding out exactly how high to bring the shadow, start out with less and add a bit more and more until you can see the color while eyes are open. You really want to keep it juuuust above the line where your crease starts to hide since bringing it up too high can look like a hot mess. ;)
Remember, practice makes perfect and the key is finding what shape works for you, which takes experimentation! This technique is so easy when you get the hang of it but it does have a learning curve so be patient and add little by little. It's worth it!

I love that color (Rapture)! Unfortunately, I couldn't find that color sold separately- must purchase the Vice Palette to get it. Do you think AC/DC or Gravity are similar enough? My eyelids are hooded, so I can never get the same look as yours, but I find a way to make it work. Thanks for the tutorial!

Demolition is used as a base for the eyeshadow. One trick that works well for monolidders or those with oily eyelids is to use a very waterproof base like these eyeliner pencils versus a creamy shadow base since it won't budge throughout the day.

Thank you so much Jen for making tutorials for monolidders! You have literally been a God-send for someone like me. Quick question though: a lot of your tutorials use false eyelashes. Are there looks for monolidders that don't involve the false eyelashes? Because I'm a newbie, and have never experimented with lashes.

ReplyDeleteis there a sephora brush collection that has most of the brushes you mentioned?
ReplyDeleteAll of the brushes I used are part of the Sephora Collection Pro line which are individually sold. They do have some sets but since I haven't used them myself, I can't say for certain that the quality is as good as the individual ones which I know firsthand are excellent quality. Sometimes limited edition brushes aren't as nice as permanent individual ones (MAC lowers quality of LE for example) so I would go in-store and test it myself before purchasing.

So I have really small and narrow eyes, i try doing the makeup like you do (of course i most likely is doing it in the wrong way) but then it just make my eyes look more narrow and still small looking... As a mother of 2 teenagers in my early 40's, I find it difficult to wear some of the shimmery eyeshadows that you use in your tutorials, because the glitter accentuates the wrinkles in my eyelids.
Could you perhaps do a tutorial for older women (and do a makeover on someone's mother or aunt, LOL?) Thanks so much! I'm sure other older women would also be grateful :)

ReplyDeleteJen, why did you choose the Anastasia "Brunette" as opposed to the "Ebony"? The "Brunette" colors look very light (almost too light for asian/black hair)? I used to use a brow powder palette by Sonia Kashik that had black, grey and a dark brown but they discontinued it. I felt the black was too dark so I mixed it with the grey and brown for a perfect shade... but they discontinued it and I feel so lost as to finding a replacement for my brows. Help!

I absolutely love your tutorials, but I noticed alot of them are for monolids and for myself, I find it hard to find tutorials similar to your video formatting but for asians with double lids instead. Asians with double lids don't have double eyelids that are quite as deep as other ethnic groups double-lids so I was hoping you would show just one tutorial for asians with double eyelids or maybe do makeup on an asian friend of yours who has shallow double-eyelids, it would greatly appreciated! I love watching your videos even though I'm not a huge beauty fanatic (too lazy, lol!) but you inspire me to become one and ever since I started watching your videos, I've introduced myself to the make-up world. Thank you! oh and I love your couch, maybe you can do a post about your new place like how you semi-showed your last apartment? Looking forward to more jenfrmtotoe videos :D

Does anyone else ever have a problem where one or both monolids will turn into double eyelids after using eyeshadow or mascara? It happens to me all the time and it doesn't always go away within a few minutes...
