Smoky Eyes Tutorial for Monolids or Single Lids

Hey everyone! I just posted up the Youtube video tutorial for applying a smokey eye look for monolids. I know I've said this a few times before, but "single eyelids" are hooded lids that don't have an upper eyelid crease. Because of this feature, eye makeup is applied in a slightly different way. My technique is to use a smooth gradient in sort of an oval shape on the eyelid.

You want to create depth without "faking" any lines, if that makes sense. Monolids tend to be pretty flat in terms of actual depth but I actually find this to be more fun to work with sometimes, like a blank canvas! I especially love it when I work on single-lidded clients because they often find going to traditional makeup artists to be frustrating!

Tools I used:

Everyday Minerals foundation mix of Fairly Light Neutral and Golden Medium
Lancome Photogenic Conceal in Camee
MAC Hello Kitty beauty powder blush in Fun & Games

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
NYX Jumbo Shadow Stick in Black Bean
NYX single eyeshadow in Sweet Lagoon
NYX single eyeshadow in Midnight
NYX single eyeshadow in Opal
MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
Shiseido Eyelash Curler
Shisem falsies in XOG특
Covergirl Lash Exact Mascara

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte in #13 Peach Passion
Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in #227 Chiffon Beige

Now, this still follows the basic rules of the smokey eye. When the eyes are the "main attraction" you want to go with a less dominant lip and cheek. I used a milky peach color lipstick with a tan lipgloss on top to help neutralize the bright color. If your lips are less pigmented than mine, you might want to stick to a color that is more milky pink or light tan (NYX round lipstick in strawberry milk or circe). I also matched my blush color to my lips so that they create a monochromatic canvas other than my eyes.

Since monolidders have lashes that are tucked under their lids, a trick to help open up the eyes is to use a good pair of false eyelashes with a nice strong band. I used my favorite lashes of-all-time in this video, Shisem falsies in XOG특. These are nice because they aren't TOO long like most other lashes and I find the criss-cross shape to be quite natural.

The only downfall? Well, in my case falsies sometimes give me a crease inconsistently. Maybe the lashes just create more weight on the lid, pulling the lashline out from being tucked under? I have no idea, but whatever, I roll with it!

the lids, with very subtle "outer v" contouring

One double, one single. LOL.

Me trying really hard to keep both single. :D

Being silly because it TOTALLY stays if I keep my chin tilted up!

And both doubles if I look up or smile.

Oh, and here is a shot of my "workstation" while I was doing the recording. Camera was sitting on this chair with a mirror on top of it. And obviously, I'm sitting on the floor. You can see some of my new camera! I love this little guy (Sony Cybershot DSC-T90), it takes GREAT video, doesn't it? Ridiculously scary HD and pretty pictures! Yay!

Oh, and I just wanted to mention something. I do love all eyelids. I'm not preaching for or against anything, and I never claimed that anything was better than anything else. I simply share my techniques with what I do, and this has no reflection on my racial preferences or lid preferences. I typically use tape because it does keep my eyeliner from smearing and it lifts my lashes, but as you can see here, it does not significantly change my eye shape or size and it doesn't make me look less "Asian." Seriously guys, it's just makeup! It's the magic of being able to play and adapt and change. Don't let anyone berate you just because you want to do your makeup the way you want to (this goes both ways, monolidders don't be ashamed to love your monolids when that's what you prefer)! If it doesn't hurt you or anyone else, why not? Have fun. :)

EDIT: Just wanted to add a little note to answer a couple frequently asked questions.
* my nailpolish is Zoya Roxy
* the brushes are Sonia Kashuk Hidden Treasures set from Target
* I bought the lashes locally but you can find similar Korean ones by Darkness at

Tokidoki for Smashbox Haul

I know this is ridiculously late on the bandwagon but basically, I didn't know much about Tokidoki back when Smashbox teamed up with them to create some really cute cosmetics. Over the course of the last couple of years I have really come to fall in love with the whole Tokidoki aesthetic. After seeing the Smashbox Tokidoki Soft Lights & Brush Set in "Dolce Vita" on (which I did another small haul from, eep! will post it soon.) I decided to scour eBay to see if there was anything lingering around from the LE collection from 2007.

Lucky for me, I did stumble upon a few things here and there including an auction with this whole lot. Included is the Soft Lights & Brush Set in Dolce Vita, lipglosses in Drammatica and Dolcissima, eyeshadow quad in Modella, and the Stellina makeup mirror and pouch. Total retails for $146 and I got it for just over $40! I also got a Smashbox cosmetics pouch as a freebie from the seller Dexter Trading Cosmetics, which fits everything nicely.

Probably my favorite item in this haul is the Soft Lights in Dolce Vita. It's a nice luminizing blush that looks like a pretty, rosy sweet-plum color. It's not as warm as in this picture... closer to the previous one. It came as a very generous size and has the Tokidoki heart-and-crossbones stamped into it. The brush is also very full and actually feels nice to use, which I don't usually expect in "limited edition set" items like this.

The packaging is totally amazing!

Even the inside of items had more Tokidoki detailing. Very cute stamping on the mirrors.

Here are swatches. Top row: lipglosses in Drammatica and Dolcissima
Bottom row: Soft Lights in Dolce Vita, Modella eyeshadow quad

Overall, the collection that I've tried is very cute and well-packaged. I was a bit let down with the eyeshadows because obviously they aren't too pigmented on my medium NC30 skin but I think they would make a lovely wash on someone with lighter skin than me (let me know if you'd be interested in buying). The blush I LOVE and the glosses are super pigmented which is great in my book. And of course, what can I say, I'm a sucker for cute packaging!

If you want to check more out, try ebay since there are a few things going for less than retail. Let me know if any of you guys got some of this collection back when it came out and how you like it. :)

And do remember we are still giving away some fantastic goodies from Mineral Magic Cosmetics here! Please enter and get awesome free stuff. :D

Liquid Leggings, Denim Pencil Skirt, and Proportions

This is just going to be a quickie fashion post. I know a lot of you petite girls keep asking about how it is that I make myself look taller than my GIGANTIC 4'10.5" stature. The truth? As much as I love how platform heels make my legs look longer, it just isn't reasonable for wearing to work everyday. Proportion is the real key. I know I've said it so many times, but it's simply the truth. Proportions can trick the eye to see more flattering or unflattering body shapes.

I'm using a couple of recent outfits as an example. (Please excuse the very messy bathroom, by the way.) Here I chose to make my flashy liquid leggings look more wearable with a feminine tunic (worn dress-style for me) and a long open cardigan. The "dress" nips in at the natural waist and also creates a shorter torso proportion, giving the appearance of having longer legs. Lacey detailing at the neck draws your eyes to your face so the flashy leggings don't compete as loudly.

tunic top - 579, cardigan - Forever 21, leggings - Target, leopard peep-toes - Vaneli

The leggings also go down to the ankle so there aren't any extra lines cutting the leg line shorter from, say, calf-length leggings. Sturdy heels give an extra couple inches too, but they aren't too high to be uncomfortable.

The second outfit showcases another beloved oversized-tee. I tucked the top into my high-waisted denim pencil skirt to help define the waist. The puffy top doesn't hurt in the bust department either, and gives a more hourglass-shape illusion. The cropped cardigan further accentuates the high waist-line and makes the bottom half of the body seem longer. These shoes only have a 2" heel but seem taller because it is low-cut at the toe. There are no ankle straps to cut the leg line.

Without the cardigan, the look still works but is probably best for those with narrow shoulders. A big chested woman might look top heavy with this look!

Hope that helps a couple of you shorties (or anyone) dress with your proportions in mind. You know where to leave any other fashion questions: comments, comments, comments!

Bridal Makeup Video Tutorial

I know tons of you ladies have been asking for this so, as promised, I recorded a bridal makeup tutorial video for you all! It is very, very similar to how I did my makeup for my wedding last year. I just had better skin and I think the brow-highlight color was probably less intense for the wedding, since I used a different brush.

I've mentioned it before, but I will say it again, here are a few tips to keep in mind for makeup during your wedding:

* Photography is so important and will last longer than the day itself, so keep in mind how your makeup will look behind the lens
* Avoid anything that is too reflective like makeup/lotions with spf (including mineral makeup), and avoid glitters and shimmers if possible
* Use a matte brow bone highlight color and matte blush (you want the shine in your eyes, not your brow bone)
* A classic makeup look is always going to look good in photos, now and in the future
* Avoid anything that makes you too uncomfortable (eg. lenses if you don't wear them daily, eyelid tape if you aren't used to it, brand new untested foundation, etc)
* PRACTICE ahead of time, especially if you are doing your own makeup. With a makeup artist, set up a practice run before the wedding day to make sure you are going to get what you want.
* Use a new tube of WATERPROOF mascara!
* Long-wear lipcolor (I like Maybelline Superstay Gloss) can be really useful for not giving your husband a lipstick smear! ;)

I recorded this a couple days ago when I wasn't feeling well and was home sick, so please forgive the less-than-perfect skin. New cam records in HD!! Scary!! If you like the video, please comment, rate, and subscribe to my Youtube channel.

Here's a rundown of everything I used:

- Graftobian concealer and hi-def foundation
- Everyday Minerals blush in Apple
- NYX Mosaic Powder in Highlighter
- MAC blot powder

- Urban Decay Primer Potion
- Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner in Deep Brown (as a base over the tape and blending into skin)
- Covergirl Lash Exact waterproof mascara
- MAC fluidline in blacktrack (lining both top and bottom lashlines)
- Criss-cross and tapering style false lashes
- Nyx single shadows in dark brown and white
- Revlon 12-hour eyeshadow quad in Copper Spice

- Maybelline Superstay Gloss in #160 Glass Rose

A few pics of the finished product:

And a bit further away to get the overall effect.

Hope it is helpful to you brides-to-be out there! Let me know if you have any wedding-specific questions and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. I am doing makeup for a wedding in just a few weeks, so this was a fun little refresher for me. :)

I also wanted to add a little reminder that the Mineral Magic Cosmetics Giveaway is going on RIGHT NOW so please be sure to enter! I'm stoked to share some of their brushes with you because I really love the ones I own.

Okay, hopefully my cam battery is charged enough that I can take pics of these Ben Nye swatches on my arm. Haha. See you guys next time~

A trip to the Zoo!

Hey guys, today was a sick day and while home from work, I visited my mom and saw some adorable hummingbirds in the back yard. This reminded me of my trip that I took for my anniversary to the famed Omaha Zoo. As the hubs and I are both huge animal lovers, we absolutely had a blast and definitely want to visit again. I thought I'd share a few pics with you all!

Here is just me being bored during the road trip. Don't cars have the best lighting? Very flattering! It hides all flaws!

And here is my look that I wore on zoo day. I didn't want anything too heavy or dark so of course I went with one of my favorite oversized-tees! I wore one of those lacey tube-bras underneath for modesty without adding extra layers.

My makeup was very, very natural. I slathered on spf 70 sunscreen on my face so heavy makeup was NOT an option unless I wanted everything to slide off. Concealer, blush, and a simple neutral eye worked well which was set with translucent powder.

Here are the zoo pics. This is a manly peacock doing a sexy dance for his lady friend.

This is what happens when lady peacock is wooed. Baby peacocks!

Hilarious otter pooping

Gorilla lady is chillin' on top of the viewing bubble

Sunbear is my favorite. His tongue is hanging out and I'm pretty sure he was twitching. 20 feet up in a tree.

happy tiger?

No-neck bird is sreepy.

Goooooooooorgeous hummingbird! I love so much!!!

Tapir looks kinda dumb.

Love the color

This giant fish was craaaazy big. It looked fake, and there were many of them.

I don't think this leaf mantis liked my pink shirt much. He did this when I got close.

Pretty seahorse!

And there's no zoo without elephants

And just because we LOVED this restaurant so much I wanted to share. It was called Blue Sushi Sake & Grill and they have the best frickin' food in all of Omaha. I need to go back just to go there again, I think. Yum yum!

Food porn. Coconut Tempura Chicken. Sweet-son-of-a-gun! I love the cucumber slice in the water, so fresh.

Ahhh, I love reminiscing over good photos and good memories! Speaking of memories, REMEMBER to enter the big Mineral Magic Cosmetics Giveaway I'm holding. It's some really great stuff, that I actually do use myself.

That's all I got for now, but I have lots of good things to share coming up including new lenses and jewelry, and a bridal makeup video tutorial. I shot the footage yesterday, now I just need to edit everything! Talk to you guys soon!

Awards from my Lovely Ladies!

Just wanted to post up a few awards I've received lately. Can I just say that I get pretty baffled every time I get one? I'm very much honored and flattered that anyone would think of my blog. :)

First off, from Sparkled Beauty is the Lemonade Stand Award.

Aww, look how cute it is! I think this one is just about spreading around the blogging love. :D

I also got the Kreativ Blogger award from Candace Chin and comes with a stipulation... info on the recipient!

To receive this award I'm required to write 8 things about myself:
1. I looooooove dancing, especially club-style latin like salsa, cumbia, bachata, etc.
2. I graduated with a 5-year degree in Industrial Design, which is product design.
3. My degree's emphasis was in Psychology and I am absolutely fascinated with how people think and act.
4. I am addicted to listening to Loveline with Dr. Drew on podcast.
5. I have a very crooked pinkie, since birth. Youtubers probably already caught onto that. ;)
6. The freckle on my lip randomly appeared my junior year of high school. I thought it was toasted seaweed (gim), but I couldn't scratch it off!
7. I am currently reading the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World graphic novels. Totally hilarious and can't wait for the movie to come out starring Michael Cera!

Finally, I got the Meme Award from Alice in Pursuit.

Award Rules
Acknowledge the person who gave the award
Nominate seven other blogs
Share seven personality traits so we can get to know you better

My personality traits:
1. Geniune - With me, what you see is what you get. I hate mind games and I just try to be down-to-earth and real.
2. Organized and cluttered - I have very organized piles! I swear!
3. Nom nom - I eat often and I love food. Gotta keep those blood sugar levels regular, right?
4. Delicate flavors - Speaking of food, I'm not a big sweets person. I like delicate flavors and will eat the cake but scrape allllll the frosting off.
5. Nerdy - Back in the day I took lots of honors classes and graduated high school with a 4.0 (4.5 with weighted classes). WHAT HAPPENED TO ME SINCE?? ;)
6. Affectionate - I love hugs, kisses, having good friends, and being physically close to people I care about.
7. Gonna pull that nerdy card again and just say that my Jung/Meyers-Briggs personality type (yay for social psych) is ENFP or Extraverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving. This has always been my personality type no matter what questions are asked, however many times I take the test, what format it's in, every single time. It fits me to a T.

I feel totally awful for not tagging anyone specifically, but I lost all of my bookmarks when I reformatted my computer so I just don't think it would be fair. :/ So instead, I would like to call upon my lovely blog readers to give me your top 3 favorite blogs. Maybe I can replenish my blog list. :)

Del Sol Polishes and Girly to Rock Transformation

Just wanted to share a couple of pics of some Del Sol polishes I ordered. For those of you who haven't heard of them, Del Sol polishes actually change color in sunlight. Pretty cool idea, and has the potential for mega awesomeness.

Here are the polishes indoors:
*heartbreaker - red to purple with glitter
*surfer girl - pink to pale orange frost
*ruby slipper - silver glitter to red
*vanity - pale pink to lavendar pearl
*rock star - blue glitter to deep green glitter

And outside in direct sunlight:

Obviously, some polishes "work" better than others. Vanity is pretty awesome (although I bought it for a friend, so it's not even mine!) and Ruby Slipper works quite well on the nail. I was the most disappointed with Rock Star because I was looking forward to it a lot and it doesn't appear to have changed at all. I haven't actually tried this on my nails though, so it might just be stubborn in the bottle.

Speaking of rock star, I wanted to also share a funny little fashion transition I had one morning.

I recently bought this beautiful belt from Urban Outfitters because I found that it actually fit my petite waist. Waist belts never seem to fit me (although I can find a plethora of regular-hip-fitting belts, now that I never wear them) so I grabbed it while I could.

I really wanted to wear it with a new floral skirt I bought from Wet Seal with one of my Forever 21 oversized t-shirts, and came up with this pretty, girly combo. Then, as what happens many mornings, I decided my shoes were too uncomfortable and kicked them off.

And I replaced them with my Frye Harness Pull-On boots. MUCH more comfy, but wait, something is missing...

Oh yes, oh yes. My moto jacket. I think it completes a nice balance to the girly skirt and belt. Much more of a reflection of how I was feeling that day.

Don't get me wrong. I love my girly-girl looks but I just wasn't FEELING it that day. I just can't leave the house feeling out of whack with my outfit. It feels WRONG sometimes, you know? (Or maybe you don't know and it's just me being quirky. In that case, YOU LIAR!! At least this is what I will keep telling myself.)

If I am, please tell me your own fashion quirks so I don't have to hug myself to feel normal again.
