Toy Soldier Halloween Tutorial

*salutes*

Today I have another Halloween tutorial to share with you. I'm probably the most excited about this one because it's so over-the-top and probably what I'm going to wear for Halloween this year. (I love that lion costume so much but it's too close to Puss in Boots that I wore last year and I have to switch things up!) I hope the intensity of this tutorial comes across in the video because in person it is really over-the-top for me, especially since I wear pretty low-key makeup most days. ^_^

I bought the legwarmers separately from http://www.sockdreams.com

I was actually inspired to do this look after seeing the ridiculously adorable costume from dwdshoes.com which, I want to say for the record that they offered to send me a few things and although they had shoes and clothes I basically made a beeline to the costumes to do tutorials for you all. What's the point of doing a review on shoes when I could get something that would give a bit of fun back to the beauty community that has been so supportive of me?

So no, I'm not crazy enough to buy a million costumes to tramp around to several posh parties on Halloween this year, but I have been blessed an incredible amount of love and support to be able to make my silly little videos which I would not have been able to do without you. Sometimes even little opportunities give big rewards. :)

So here are the pics to my Toy Soldier/Doll/Mannequin look:

Does my jaw look like it's going to come unhinged here?

This was slightly fail because I was trying to show the eyeshadow. At least the hair looks good!

I salute you!

The costume designers did such a great job with the hat! It really makes the outfit. :)

Here are some pics of the full costume. I'm so impressed with how this wig lays! The layers fall in really pretty curls. I'm also obsessed with these legwarmers which happen to fit TINY which is great for me and my "chopstick" legs (that nickname is credit to my mom). These are size S/M so definitely size up if you are looking into buying them.

A shot from the behind. How adorable is the back of this dress! ^_^

And just in case this post wasn't creepy enough, here is a photo that really shows the plasticy doll-face look that I was going for.

I did notice in the close-up photos that light was reflecting right into my cheeks so the red circles don't look round but you can tell in the full-length photos that they are. It was just the Lioele Blooming Shimmer Pearl Base that I used to make my face shiny and more doll-like that gave it that extra bounce of light. ;D

I also noticed that the blonde wig makes me look fairer. Totally weird! I hadn't even worn a wig before this one so I was impressed at how nice this looked. I'm going to have to find excuses to wear it again. (ooh, blonde Disney girls! ^o^) Hope you don't get sick of me as a blonde. I've never had anything lighter than dark brown highlights before. Haha!

Okay, for SERIOUS I am going to bed early tonight for some well-deserved rest. Thank you so much for reading/watching and let me know how you liked it in the comments. ^_^

  8. Hi Jen! I am a newer follower. Found you through the petite blogging community, but I am also enjoying your makeup posts.

I wanted to let you know that you have definitely inspired me to put more effort into Halloween this year. Usually I am such a stick-in-the-mud. :p I am going to be Alice in Wonderland (the non-sexy version, since this is for work!) using a Betsy Johnson dress and a pinafore that my grandma made for me when I was in elementary school, lol. I will make my best attempt to mimic your makeup in this post, minus the jawline. I am excited about the plastic doll with rosy cheeks look! Hope, hope I do a good job!

Soo...thank you for your great videos. I feel more inspired and informed! :)

  19. I think your look is more like a nutcracker than a toy soldier, cus toy soldiers don't usually have movable mouthparts.

  37. wow! u did such amaaazzing job with the makeup! by far my fav and then the lion

    ReplyDelete
  38. very niiiiice ;) best one yet! although i loved the makeup for your lion too.

just a couple of small suggestions (i did costuming before on the nutcracker). if you'd like, try filling in your eyebrows a darker black, and make them striaght, as opposed to going with your natural shape.

for the mouth/jaw lines, draw the line a more solid/opaque black. try to mimic a sharpie look (maybe a liquid or gel liner that is SUPER pigmented. after that, LIGHTLY and thinly smudge on both sides, without compromising the center's blackness--that part should stay distinct.

if you try it, good luck. but either way, looks phenomenal!

  45. Hi Jen,

I was thinking of going as a doll for this year's Halloween and this post of yours is just incredibly inspiring! It's amazing how you managed to create a look that is pretty yet freaky at the same time. I love it!

  46. Hi jen, I just wanted you to know that I WILL DEFINITELY be using this tutorial for halloween. Well, just the makeup part because the costume is sold out. uguu. But I have another costume that will go well with the makeup too. Now I just need to go out and buy some of the makeups. Do you know any cheaper dupes for the Lioele blooming shimmer pearl and MAC face and body foundation? Don't really have the money to spend on those. >< Oh yea, by the way when I first saw your picture, I was not able to recognize you AT ALL. That's how good this tutorial was.

  47. ^And thats why you're Anonymous, ignorant.

Jen, I've been watching a lot of your tutorials and you're such a wonderful person. I was seriously going to stay home and do nothing for this Halloween but you've inspired me to get my lazy butt up, lol. I'm going to do this look if you don't mind ^_^ I think it's freaking AWESOME. I'm super excited for halloween now and I can't wait for it!

P.S.-But don't worry I won't look half as pretty as you do :)
