Smokey Eye Prom Makeup Tutorial

9:00 AM

Hey guys! I know it's nearing prom fever time for a lot of you or for high schoolers you may know, so I wanted to share a tutorial that will give a photogenic smokey eye that will match any dress. One of my personal favorite go-to smokey eyes tends to be the classic black/charcoal/silver look so I thought it would be suitable for this year's black-and-white trend. This look would also work for going out or any special events where you need your eyes to stand out.

Check out the video and additional photos below!

The weather was super nice outside so we decided to take advantage of the setting sun and take a few outdoor photos! Since a lot of prom photos with dates are taken outside, I feel like this is a better representation of how the full face will look.

Here you can see the blending of the eyeshadow a bit better. The taupe around the edge of the black really helps to soften the transition from the smokey eyeshadow to the browbone, although the overall look still remains very grey-toned. I recommend this "blending" shade to be a matte shadow slightly darker than your skintone for the most seamless effect.

For darker smokey looks, I always go for a bolder brow to help frame the eyes. I also wait until after the shadow is done to fill in the brows because sometimes my brows will be too light if I do them with bare eyes. The key is finding the right balance which changes depending on how heavy the eye makeup is.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial! If you'd like to see my previous prom tutorials and tips for prom night, you can find them under the Prom label here. Have tons of fun, take lots of pictures, and be safe! :)

  4. Gorgeous photos and lovely tutorial! Although I love the look, since this is supposed to be a prom look, I think it'd be great to use more drugstore products if it's something technically geared towards teens (I know you love NYX but even that is relatively hard to find for some people).

  19. hello! i started following your blog recently, and i must say that i love your work. your tutorials are very helpful and easy to follow. if you are taking requests for future videos, would you please be able to do a tutorial on how to do makeup on older women (50s-60s)? my sister is getting married, and in order to save money, i will be doing my mother's makeup. i did a practice run on her and it was a disaster! your expertise would be much appreciated!

  24. Hi! What camera do you use when you make your videos? Do you film with auto focus? Thinking of buying one and want some tips :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. I use a Canon 5D Mark III and my husband is the one focusing the lens. If you want a good cam with auto-focus I recommend the T4i! I have that one as well and it's not as bulky or expensive as the Mark III, which I have since I take blog pics too. Still really great filming quality!

  25. Hi Jen! I used this look for a dance performance and it was awesome! I substituted the grey color with a burgundy, but it turned out well :) Thank you for your tutorials, I had a really hard time with makeup. I was also wondering if you could do a neutral colored eye look for monolids. Thanks always. You're so pretty!!

  30. hey jen, have you ever tried fairydrops mascara or shiseido majolica majorca? hear its amazing for asian lashes though i've personally never tried

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've tried both! They are both really great for holding curl after curling lashes and are both very waterproof. Shiseido majolica majorca uses a comb-style wand while Fairydrops has 3 curvy balls to apply the mascara. They are all very difficult to remove though, so I recommend an oil-based remover. :)

  31. I actually have never requested a video, but I would love to see Ashley Smith's makeup done in the new Thirty Seconds to Mars video for "Up in the Air". She's the same one in this gif: http://24.media.tumblr.com/379eab3927dc51b0e2e57fdb5936156f/tumblr_mll8muJGw81qbjyiko9_500.gif

:D hehehe I love your videos, and they've helped so much with my monolids and helped me gain confidence to experiment with different colors and techniques!

  32. I love this look! I'm Asian myself and has found it hard to find good makeup tutorials for our eye shapes! This helps a lot, thanks! xx
