HAIR TUTORIAL: Floating French Braid (Reverse Waterfall Braid)

Hey everyone! It's been such a long time since I've done a hair tutorial so I thought I'd share with you a modified french braid that I discovered while playing around with my hair. From Youtube video comments, I've learned that its proper name is the "dutch lace braid" but I call it a floating french braid since the braid ends up looking like it's gracefully hanging by ladder strands from the hair part. It adds a whimsical twist to an everyday school or work look. Take a look at the tutorial below!

Here is the final look. You can see the feminine curve of the braid which can, of course, be manipulated to sit along the front line of your bangs or lay higher or lower on the head depending on how you want it to be. This type of braid tends to look amazing on single-length hair or with longer layers and especially brings out the dimensionality of highlighted hair.


From the back you can see how rotating the braid creates the cool, single rope braid look. I personally love seeing how the strands are laced into the braid.


Here is one more showing the overall look with the soft curls. I find that a larger barrel curling iron (here I'm using 1.5in) gives a more carefree look compared to a smaller wand. Curling away from the face also frames the braid and looks distinctly more 70's chic.

    Ooo, this is definitely a pretty hair look! "Dutch lace braid" or "floating french braid", both are pretty names for a pretty hairstyle haha~
    Humhum, I'd have to say that I'm a braiding beginner because I don't really do anything with my hair. ;n; Bah. But I'm going to try this one out, hopefully it doesn't turn out looking odd! xD Thank you for the tutorial!~

    I'm definitely a braiding a beginner.... I can't really do much with my hair except to curl it. Just watching you do those first few curls... yeah let's just say I got lost. Thank you though for this tutorial! It came out really lovely on you! :D

    Oh I love this! I've been trying to figure out how to do something simple but cool looking to my long hair since everything else takes too long and a regular braid can get boring. thanks, I can't wait to tryy =P
