June 2012 Beauty Favorites!

10:09 PM

It's time for monthly favorites again! I've so enjoyed June in LA with the amazing weather and I've finally gotten the chance to really find a couple new products that work for my parched skin. Also in this video, I shared a little peek at my yet-unnamed cockatiel!

Check out the video & swatches of my new concealer below! :)

PRODUCTS MENTIONED:

Water
Parian Spirit travel spray (Japonesque version at Ulta)
China Glaze Surfin' For Boys (from the Summer Neons collection)

ON ME:

Sheer mint top is from Forever 21 (as seen in this haul)
Lipstick is Revlon Lip Butter in Peach Parfait

My favorite new item from this month has to be my Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer. In terms of face products, it's no surprise that MUFE always seems to end up in my favorites again and again. One of the biggest challenges of being Asian-American is that it's not always easy to find a good selection of yellow-based face makeup, so it's been quite nice finding a brand that suits my skin color exactly. I use shade 7 on my MAC NC30 skin.

The texture of the concealer is a thick cream and it actually reminds me a lot of my potted concealers since it's so opaque, but once it's on the skin it dries down to a nice smooth, matte finish.

You can see in this close up a tiny dollop, then the concealer swiped, then blended in completely.

Here is a more accurate view of what it looks like to the naked eye. Since the concealer covers so well, a little goes a long way and I literally only use about 2 tiny drops like this for my entire face.

What I love most about this product is that it matches my skin so well that I can just wear a bit of this and feel comfortable going out for the day. I don't like to wear heavy foundation everyday but I like to cover my hyperpigmentation/acne scars so this is perfect for me. It also hasn't broken me out so far but I will continue using it and let you guys know if anything changes.

Hope you enjoyed this month's favorites!

Because sharing is caring, let me know in the comments what your favorite concealer is and what type of problem you use concealer for the most. :)

  8. Thanks for the video Jen! I LIVE off mufe foundation samples (because it's so expensive, and the samples last me for weeks). On regular days when I don't want heavy coverage I use Almay's clear complexion concealer cause it has salicylic acid, which is good for my acne blemishes and scarring.

I also only have one eye palette, and it's the NAKED! It really, truly is the go to palette. saved my liiiife.

  9. Glad the bird has a nice home! :)

I am excited to hear about the MUFE concealer! I live in Vegas so my eyes are really dry, plus I need to cover some dark circles when I don't get enough sleep. I might consider it when I run out of my current concealer (Laura Mercier, Secret Concealer #1) So far, the LM concealer is the best I have found for myself...this is the third pot I bought and it lasts for a long time. But...it is a pot and not a tube, so it has so much more bacteria I bet.

Glad you found something to help you keep to your New Years resolution of cleaning makeup brushes! :)

    1. Woo you remembered my resolution! Hahaha... I haven't been keeping up with some of my other ones. Gotta get back on that!

Have you tried Bobbi Brown's concealer? I've heard it's really good for undereyes as well!

  10. I have been using Mary Kay's medium coverage and I love it!! I could go with just wearing it alone and also a little goes a long way with it. :)

  11. Hi Jen! What drugstore concealer can you recommend for concealing acne spots? I don't wear liquid foundation, just powder foundation so I'm looking for one that will not cake on me, not heavy and patchy on my skin but will still do the job? The MUFE concealer is too pricey for me :(

    1. Honestly, I haven't found a drugstore concealer that I'm really satisfied with. Since the MUFE lasts sooooo long (as I showed, you only use the tiniest amount) I would save up little by little and splurge on it. I would rather use expensive concealer and cheap everything else than the other way around!

  12. hi jen! i don't know where to request make up tutorials but i just watched t-ara's new mv for day by day and i LOVE their makeup (hyomin/jiyeon have similar styles) and it kind of looks like what you have on in this video. a super smoky eye that starts like mid-lid? i wish i had some screencaps to show you but i would say the look i love is at 2:23 and 2:41 in the mv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brnCe8lL7l4&feature=player_embedded)

  13. So far I've been using bare mineral's original foundation in golden medium as my concealer. It's yellow-y and works well for my skin as I too am Asian American and have OILY skin. And acne prone skin so I have to cover blemishes as well as LOTS of scarring and hyperpigmentation. One thing I wanted to tell you about that you might love is the Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation. It's AMAZING. I barely have to use concealer as it covers so incredibly well, but it looks so natural and smooth! Try it! I think you'll LOVE it like I do. I think we have similar skin types and skin woes.... I'm definitely interested in trying the MUFE concealer you talked about!

  14. It's really awesome that you were able to find a concealer you love! I need to get that concealer! AND Congrats on drinking more water! Again, I need to get on that boat. Question: Does the concealer sink into the fine lines underneath your eyes? I have those and I am eighteen so slightly concerned that I have premature wrinkling and worried that I can't find a concealer that will hide my dark circles.

    1. Try out a sample from Sephora and see if it will crease on you. I use it mostly on blemishes so I can't really say if it would be best for undereyes!

    2. How can we get a sample of a certain product from Sephora? Or did you mean go try it in their stores? Do you have any suggestions for under eye concealer or dark circle treatments? Thanks!!!

  15. Is it the "Orange You Hot?" color from the China Glaze Summer Neons Collection polish? Because the link you gave directs to the "Under The Boardwalk" so I want to ask to make sure. : )

    1. Yes it's from the same collection. So is Under the Boardwalk which is why I linked it! :)

  16. Hey Jen! I know this isn't related to this post, but I don't have twitter so I thought I'd post this here.

First, thanks so much for your blog and tutorials! They've helped me a lot, coming from a mono-lidder who has struggled with make up all my life. So thank you!

This is just a suggestion and request: I think it'd be super helpful during your tutorials if after applying each step (this is mainly applicable for the eye make-up), you just look into the camera for a few seconds, maybe even just zoom in to your eyes while you look straight forward for a few seconds, and closed eyes for a few seconds. Because, even monolidders all have different shapes of eyes, and I don't quite know what each step of eyeshadow and eyeliner should ideally look like on my eyes. I know this will be extra work on your part, but it would just be SO helpful for people like me - people who aren't very familiar with applying make up, because you are so good and fast at applying and you apply each step then jump to the next step without people getting a good glimpse at what that step is supposed to really look like and do. I realize most people who are competent at make up can infer what it is supposed to look like, but like I said, I'm not very good at it, and I struggle with it.

Just a request that if fulfilled, I would find SO helpful!!! I understand if you're too busy to do it though. Thank you either way! Look forward to your next post!

  17. Hi Jen! Love the instagram picture of the cockatiel sleeping against your chin; so cute! I hatched my boys in my own home, and they don't even like to do that. Anyway, once the cockatiel gets a little older he/she may begin to sing. That's pretty much the deal breaker, as females are very very quiet most of the time [with the occasional call/squawk if she hears an outside bird]. In fact, my papa and mama cockatiels had reversed gender until we ended up getting eggs. Hope it Helps!

    1. Aww you hatched babies at home! How precious. :)

He started singing 2 days ago and today. It's the same line repeated over and over so I wonder if it's something he learned before he came to us? I also noticed lots of new yellow pin feathers on his face so I'm guessing he's currently in a molting stage which is maybe why he still has banding on his tail and grey on his face. Either way, we are excited to hear him sing!!

  20. I use light application of Mary Kay mineral foundation and then set it with a neutral powder! That works for me :) Of course, I am a teen so I have slightly different skin problems...

  22. Hi Jen, Been following you for a while now and am loving your makeup videos. I was looking through your old stuff and noticed that about 2 years ago you had a brown spot on your lip. Do you mind telling me how you got rid of it? I just got a brown spot on my lip about 2 months ago (appeared out of nowhere). I talked to my derm and she said she will remove it, but I am just curious as to how you removed yours? However, if that is too personal to share then don't worry about it.
I need to get myself that Naked palette. =) thanks!

    1. That spot appeared there when I was in high school, and over the last couple of months it faded away! I think it may have been that my skin just finally exfoliated that part to the surface after all these years. I didn't do anything special!

  23. would you recommend the concealor for underneath the eyes as well. I am in mid-thirties and need something for the undereye dark spots???? is it too heavy for that?

  27. I've quietly followed your blog for a few years but now that you have a cockatiel (!!!) I had to comment.

Do you know if you're going to train/socialize yours? It is not that difficult to do, especially with hand feeding and patience, and they crave the attention. We had a very clever one who essentially ruled the apartment. They develop the sweetest and most hilarious personalities once they form a relationship with you -- especially if you are willing to gently and cautiously scratch their heads. Most will develop a repertoire of favorite tunes (try whistling one often and he will pick it up over time) and you can often hear them "practicing" and then "tut-tutting" at themselves for making mistakes.

  30. I'm so happy to see you've taken in the little bird! Do you think the MUFE concealer would work well on minor exczema? I don't want it to look cake-y on the bumps of dry skin.

  35. Hi Jen, thank you for telling us about this concealer.. i will buy it soon ^^
I have some hyper-pigmentation marks but never put on concealer before, so I need your advice :)
For special occasion from day to night, is it okay if I only put this concealer alone without foundation? Or do we need to put on foundation as well? if yes, which way is preferable, to put the concealer after the foundation or the other way around?

if possible could you do a tutorial your way to apply concealer? :)
Hope you'll reply... Thank you so much...

  37. Hi Jen, i love your blogs. They've helped me a lot with my problems with make up, especially since I have sensitive skin which makes me break out easily. I think it's really cool that you put so much time and effort to do your videos and share your knowledge. Thank you so much :) btw can you recommend a great foundation for someone with oily skin like mine, I break out easily, and have huge problems with large pores and I need something to cover acne marks and long lasting through out the day :( well hope you could help out me out..thanks again!

  38. Going along with the water theme, hydration on the face is a huge industry in Asia. Lately, I've been trying Garnier's Aqua Defense. I use it as an essence/serum before I apply the moisturizer. I thought it was pretty good for my skin, oily combo, during summer. Anything with lots of hydraulic acid is awesome. Hydration also help decrease sebum production.

But I'm still on the look out for a better hydrating essence/serum.
