REVIEW & SWATCHES: Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette

9:00 AM

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share the much anticipated review of the brand new Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette. Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably already know that the Naked line is not just Urban Decay's strongest offering, but it's a concept that has been duped by nearly every major makeup company out there so it's nice to see UD expanding it to fit a wider variety of preferences and skintones.

Just like Naked 2, Naked 3 comes with a synthetic dual-ended eyeshadow brush (blending and flat) which is quality and very much usable. It also comes with a sampling of 4 Primer Potions: Original, Eden (nude matte), Sin (shimmer), and Anti-Aging.

The packaging is quite similar to Naked 2 which is very sturdy and snaps shut. Inside the case are 12 all brand-new eyeshadows and a well for the shadow brush as well as a large mirror.

Strange / Dust / Burnout / Limit

Buzz / Trick / Nooner / Liar

Factory / Mugshot / Darkside / Blackheart

Here are my own short descriptions and a mega close-up of each shade:

Strange: matte beige with slight pink undertone

Dust: very shimmery, pale peachy-pink with glitters

Burnout: satin pinky-peach

Limit: pink-tan matte

Buzz: satin rose with tiny microglitters

Trick: pinky-copper shimmer with microglitters

Nooner: cool matte taupe

Liar: satin pinky-mauve

Factory: satin warm brown

Mugshot: satin taupe

Darkside: satin plum-taupe with a lot of depth

Blackheart: sooty, matte dark chocolate with copper glitters

Overall this is a beautiful rosy palette which swatches wonderfully save for Dust (#2 pale pink with shimmers) due to the high glitter content which flaked a lot, and Trick (#6 glittery copper) which needed a few layers for smooth opacity. Everything else was UD's typical amazing, buttery quality including all the mattes which are to-die-for as well as the last few satins which are incredible. I'm really obsessing over the complexity of Darkside (#11 dark taupe) and Blackheart (#12) especially.

This being such a pink-heavy palette, I had a few reservations as to how wearable this set would be on very warm skintones but I actually found it to be quite flattering on. Will it be more dynamic and "naked" on someone with blue eyes and pale skin? Possibly, but I would not rule out this looking effortlessly pretty for every skintone as well. The difference is that 50% of this set gives a distinctly pink look versus calling it a truly naked palette. I actually get tons of requests for everyday pink looks so it just depends on color preference.

For those who already own a Naked, I'll have a blog post up soon with side-by-side comparisons of all 3 Naked palettes and a run down of how they differ. No worries, I gotcha so keep checking back! ;) Comparison blog post is up here!

Naked 3 will be available later this month (no exact date yet) now for $52 at urbandecay.com and at Sephora and Ulta in December.

Readers, do you love pinky-neutrals? Will you be picking up the Naked 3? Let me know in the comments below!

  4. How do you think it'll go on warmer skintones, I'm probably around Mac NC30-35... I'm not sure if those will even show up on my skin for the lighter ones. *firstworldmakeupproblems*

  5. Thanks for the up close swatches! If I wore eyeshadow, I would definitely pick this one up--the rose and warner colors are so pretty and can warm up the face and give it a nice glow. I really love the look of Blackheart too with the added copper glitters.

  14. love the matte shades. I am not a big shimmer or satin finish fan, so maybe it is not worth to buy the entire pallate.

  15. Another one so soon? I still haven't gotten my hands on the second one!

I find this one isn't really catching my eyes - maybe it's the pink tones. I think NAKED 1 and 2 is enough for me.

  16. It's beautiful and I like that it's got some pinks in it, but I'll pass on it since I have individual eye shadows that are very similar and it doesn't have anything that really stands out enough for me to get it. Xx

  22. This is gorgeous and a PERFECT review! Thank-you for taking the time to swatch them all and do up close photos. I was so undecided about purchasing this but I just need to have it. Those are all shades that I would wear and now I feel like I need to keep going with the Naked collection! haha

  25. The colors look so pretty! I think you have convinced me to buy this one. I wasn't too crazy with Naked 2 but I think this one will be a nice addition with the Naked 1.

  28. I love the Naked 1 as it fits my skin tone just fine. I really have been eyeing Naked 3, but I'm not sure how the rosy/pink will suit my warm skin tone. I'd have to see these shades in action to really decide if it's worth picking up. Great swatches and thanks for sharing! Looking forward to your Naked comparison post!

  29. the swatches are really pretty but i usually have problems getting pale pinks to show up against my skin color (MUFE HD in 120). with the colors being so similar in this palette, do you feel like it's less versatile (fewer color combinations) than previous naked palettes? could you consider doing a few different looks with it in a separate post to show us its versatility? thanks!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yup, I'm in the midst of testing it out with a couple looks and I have to agree that it's a bit less versatile for us medium-skintoned ladies because there are so many similar medium shades.

ps: you should check this site for your small petite feet http://www.ghigocalzature.com/en/
I myself suffer from petite feet ( size 33 / 34 european size ) and sometimes it can be very annoying to buy stylish shoes. Unluckily all petite shoes are quite expensive..

  36. Can you please post a tutorial using Naked 3 on your YouTube channel?
Interested to see how these pink/rose gold shimmery hues look on asian skin. Thanks!!

  37. I do like all the Naked palettes but I think they each have too many similar shades. For a normal person - i.e. not a makeup artist - with only one skin tone and one face, I'm not sure I'll make use of ALL the shades in a palette, since I'll just use the ones that complement my skin tone best.

On the other hand, these palettes are really collectibles in their own rights, and it's easy to see how they are so loveable and popular! I would definitely get Naked 3 if only my budget allows it, instead of the N1 and N2. I also like how there are matte and shimmer shades in this palette. *thumbs up*

My only wish was to see less glitter shadows and more matte. The original Naked palette is still my favorite.

  41. My only qualm is the packaging as it's the same as Naked 2 and mine broke... The little hooks that keep it shut just totally fell out and it does not stay closed. Therefore, I have to be extremely careful with it and cannot take it traveling. I could tie a rubber band around it and tape it shut BUT I should NOT have to do that! Nontheless, I will still be purchasing the Naked 3 but will have to be extra careful with it! Thank you so much for sharing both the video and blog post!! Very well done and informative xoxox

I don't own any of the Naked palettes yet, but I'd love to. Which one do you recommend buying first?

    Thanks!

  46. Hey Jen,

i really only like Burnout and Liar from the NAKED 3 palette, so i wanted to know if you knew of any dupes for those two colours. thank you!

  48. I love the idea of this palette but it probably wouldn't be the most flattering one for me I think. Seeing as I have none, I'd go for the 2 before this one I think, though the hype and awesome reviews are making me want this one as well lol

  50. I have tried all the Naked palettes and really like the Naked 3 palette. I have found it was ideal for daytime daily use. Here's a video I posted on how I use them: http://youtu.be/H9TmDbe4lpA

  51. Definitely need all three palettes!!! Ha! Ha! THey look like a good investment....plus everything mix and matches...You don't need to shop around for matching shades. If only there was more of each shade...I guess you'll need to buy two of each palette???!!!!So expensive!! but so crave worthy!!!
