NYX Trio Sweet Lagoon/Aqua/Ocean FOTD

So a few weeks ago, someone had requested a look using the NYX trio TS23 Sweet Lagoon/Aqua/Ocean. Now, I don't have the exact palette, but I do have the individual shades. I can't guarantee the shades are a perfect match because the trios are sometimes less pigmented than the singles (all the trios I've tried have been super pigmented though) but it should be pretty close.

Here are the colors:

And the swatches on my hand. No base was used.

Super pretty, right?

After applying Urban Decay Primer Potion to both eyelids, I first took the lightest color, Sweet Lagoon, and used it as a wash over the eyelid. Aqua was then used to define the crease/outer-V to the middle of the lid. I then took Ocean and defined the outer-V, but only on the outer third of the lid and also along my lower lash line. I used single shadow Opal (blue/purple iridescent white) to highlight my brow bone and on the inner tear ducts, blending in with Ocean on the lower lashline.

I lined the upper lid using MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and lined my lower waterline. Black or navy blue pencil liner would both look great on the waterline with this look. Finally, I curled my lashes and applied mascara to complete the look. For the face I stuck with simple, natural elements so it wouldn't look overdone with the strong eye. Coral blush and clear gloss is a nice balance.

Here is a close-up of the eye

The colors look really glowy in natural light.

This is in-between light. I still think it looks quite wearable and natural.

And a couple more just before I left. My eyes look weird in the first one but I think it shows the colors nicely. :P

Did I mention I bought this leather motorcycle jacket a few weeks ago? OMG. I think I am living in this thing. I swear it matches EVERYTHING. Definitely a good investment. Will show it in its full glory in the next post. ;)

Oh, and just a reminder, I added the "followers" section on the right so follow me! I was also just thinking, would it be helpful to label FOTD's by color? Let me know in the comments.

awards and a little bit about me...

I know I've had a few awards and tags and I'm so sorry if I missed one of you but I am so incredibly grateful! Just totally humbled that you guys would think of my blog. Thank you so much, especially to Diane, Yinmei, and Alicia.

Just because I (am/was) on my lunch break at work and haven't updated in a few days (crazy, busy and fun memorial day weekend!) I thought I would fill in a little survey that I saw on one of my favorite nail blogs, Gettin' Nailed from the self-proclaimed "The Asian Girl". Not only did I learn from her blog that May is the official Asian Pacific American Heritage Month for the US, but I love her commentary and nail swatches. :)

Rules:

1. Respond and rework: Answer the questions on your blog, replace one question that you dislike with a question of your own invention, add one more question of your own.

2. Tag eight other people.

What is your current obsession? Blushes and Lipsticks. I used to be a gloss-only girl but maybe I am getting older or something. Strange!

What is your weirdest obsession? Weirdest...probably my insatiable love of sparkly, shiny things only because I am so easily distracted. Maybe that isn't so weird though, so how about that I own maybe 20+ pairs of jeans. I LOVE jeans. You can never, ever have too many.

What are you wearing today? A blue nautical-ish cotton blazer by BB Dakota, pink eyelet-detailed tee from Delia's, Solana dark wash skinnies from Pac Sun, and white studded gladiators by Michael Kors kids

What's your favorite comfort food? jjajangmyun (Korean noodle dish with black bean sauce, veggies, and pork or seafood)

What would make today special? If the sun is shining by the time I leave work, and not thunderstorming!

What would you like to learn to do? I would love to learn a bit of photography eventually, and also how to alter clothing like a pro

What's the last thing you bought? Estee Lauder lipgloss and Smashbox blush and lipgloss from beautyticket.com (take10 code for 10% off!)

What are you listening to right now? my computer whirring (psycho machine at work) and Loveline on my ipod

What is your favorite weather? Springtime in the high 70's. Warm enough for shorts and sandals but not hot enough to sweat.

What is your most challenging goal right now? Working on my portfolio and finding a stable design job

What do you think about the person who tagged you? I wasn't actually tagged, but I think The Asian Girl seems like a ton of fun.

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would it be? Oh man. Such a difficult question. Probably here at home so that even if I am not here, I could gift it to my family or people I care about.

If you could swap lives with anyone for one day who would it be and why? I think it would be really interesting to see what life is like behind Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan just because their lives are so chaotic. I think I would learn a lot and appreciate my own life too... as long as I could switch back!

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go? I would love to be scuba diving off the beaches of Australia! I think coral reefs are beautiful.

What would you like to have in your hands right now? my husband's hands :)

Which language do you wanna learn? Mandarin

What do you look for in a friend? A good sense of humor and trustworthiness

Who do you want to meet in person? I know it's silly, but I would love to meet the band Hanson. I've been a longtime fan and am quite inspired by their talent and musicality. :)

What's your favorite type of music? I have a huge range of things I listen to from Nine Inch Nails to BoA to French electronic to latin music/reggaeton to Britney Spears. Muse is one of my favorite bands of all time. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Family Force 5 and Kpop. I have a soft spot for the Postal Service and Imogen Heap. I just love anything catchy with a good beat. That can be rock, pop, alternative, indie, electronic, vocal... I don't discriminate and I'm open-minded when it comes to music.

What's your dream job? I would loooove to work in toy or shoe design!

If you had $100 now what would you spend it on? Oh dang, maybe a new purse? Or I'd put it toward a new digital camera I think.

Things you wish you could change in the past? I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and that what you have gone through points to where you are now. I'm happy with who I am now and I wouldn't want to change that.

Fashion Pet Peeve? Tribal prints. I know "world prints" are really popular right now, but I think it's a bit tacky and busy.

Do you admire anyone's style? I really love how Rachel Bilson dresses. She really knows how to flatter her petite frame.

Describe your personal style. I would say I am pretty fashion-forward for the midwest. I dress with a lot of layers and love accessories, and a good pair of jeans. The biggest thing is balance and proportion. I also tend to dress how I feel that particular day. If I feel scrubby I don't dress up and sometimes, I get dressy for the heck of it. I love trying unique things and gravitate toward detail and color. In a few words, youthful, classy, and put-together whether I am dressed up or down.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor? Cookies and cream, and green tea when I can find it (although I can't have too much since I don't usually drink/eat caffeine)

What's your favorite makeup brand? Low-end, NYX. Higher end, Mac and Urban Decay are on my love list.

What makeup do you use a lot? Urban Decay Primer Potion, nearly everyday, and MAC fluidline in Blacktrack

Do you get enough beauty sleep? Yes or no? Why? Probably not! I stay up too late for having to wake up when I do. I used to do consecutive days on 3-4 hours during school but now if I get less than 8 I am a tired mess!

Why did you start your (beauty) blog? Someone on the Soompi forums suggested that I do after I did a couple of makeup tutorials for the boards.

What do you think is the best feature about yourself? I'm very genuine. What you see is what you get... online, in person, whatever. I'm very bad at being fake and I'm just more comfortable being myself.

What is your favorite vacation spot? Florida! Sweet, sweet sunshine, dolphins, the beach, and Disney. :D

What do you like least about yourself? Perpetually 15 minutes late. T.T

How many pairs of shoes do you own? Oh geez. TOO MANY. Probably at least 40 pairs. Hello, shoe sale! I need to get rid of a few pairs!

I tag... I am going to tag a random few of my favorite girlies who are frequent commenters on my posts! Gotta give some of that love back.

In no particular order:
Catherine
IchigoBunnie
innerchild
Caroline :]
AbcGrrrL
CHOMSIRI
Askmewhats
izumi

Also, if you read all of this I think I pretty much love you to bits. You are now tagged for this survey and for the award.

Vintage Planes Photoshoot

Like I promised, here are some photos from when I did the vintage red-lipped makeup. We had the opportunity to go to this really interesting airplane museum and got some fabulous shots by the fantastic scenery.

Thank you so much Anthony for a wonderful shooting experience! You are a massively talented photographer. :)

Anthony has experience in film and it shows in his work. Doesn't his work look like it's from a movie? There's a story-telling quality to his photos that I think is really beautiful. I hope you guys enjoy seeing these photos as much as I had fun getting them taken!

A collage the photographer put together.

One of the vintage airplanes.

Old waiting-area seats.

Pearl Harbor, anyone?

I would make one fancy flight attendant.

Hope everyone has a fun Memorial Day weekend!

XOXO

Vintage Red Lips

Since I've had a few requests for a look with red lips, and also for a "Roaring 20's" look, I thought I would post up some photos of a look I did a few weeks ago for a photoshoot. I was channeling my inner vintage pin-up for this look and I was pretty happy with the results.

Now, a true 20's flapper-style look was a little more edgy than the previous woman at the time. She was young, maybe 19, and loved to be adventurous and a little bit scandalous. She cut off her hair, wore felt caps and loose shift dresses, and LOVED makeup! Lots of black eyeliner, and bright red lips. She was one fierce woman!

To translate that into today's world, it's actually very simple with flawless skin, neutral eyes, and a strong red lip. I used MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in NC30 with the Revlon colorstay eyeshadow quad in Copper Spice. If you have never tried eyeshadows, this is THE shadow I recommend you start out with. It has ever shade you need from highlighter to lid to contour and you can wear it from sheer to smokey. I love it and it is still one I grab every once in a while for a nice work-appropriate look.

Anyway, getting back on topic, what really makes the vintage look is the false eyelashes, winged black liner, filled-in brows, and strong red lips. I used MAC fluidline in blacktrack for the eyeliner and NYX Round Lipstick in Snow White (my perfect red shade!) You'll have to forgive my pictures since I took them after the shoot and my makeup wasn't as perfect as when I applied, but you'll get the idea.

A close-up of the shadow.

This shows the color slightly more accurately.

Look how white the red lipstick makes my teeth look!

And a few more in natural light.

As for my outfit, the fringe top is from Urban Outfitters and the pencil skirt and hair flower are from Forever 21.

Pics from the photoshoot next time! :)

My Mosaic Powders (including my old ones, highlighter and paradise)

Highlighter is a must-have for me, and isn't Dare lovely?

Swatches of Single Eyeshadows in Chic, Sunrise, Irises, and Luxor

ALL of the Round Lipsticks I own: Jupiter, Power, Fusion, Louisiana, Doll, Indian Pink, Rea, Circe, Eros, and Snow White

Jupiter is really pretty on! Circe is good for a nude lip and Snow White is my HG (holy grail) red lipstick. It's the perfect shade for me.

And this is just me and my NYX goodies! HEAVEN!!

I have sooo much more that I want to post but I am still fighting this cough and life has been throwing me a quite few curve balls lately. I'd appreciate any prayers and words of encouragement you guys have. :)

Also, let me know in the comments what you guys picked up from the sale! I'd love to hear about your hauls and your favorite NYX stuff!

UPDATE: I just made a new, Spring-time layout update for the blog. Let me know what you think. :)

Prom Makeup E-mail

I received an e-mail tonight about prom makeup and I think the response would help a lot of you girls so I decided to post it. I hope all of you have a fabulous prom and feel beautiful all night!

*****

Hi Jen!
My friend and I are in a bind. We started making our appointments to get our makeup done too late so we're stuck with doing our own for prom this Saturday. We're both Korean so we feel like you'd know better than some random makeup consultants on how to do our makeup for prom. Do you have any recommendations? (By the way her dress is black and pink and mine is shades of blue.)
Thank you so much!!!!
Stephanie

*****

Hi Stephanie!

Your makeup for prom can either go 3 ways, color-wise. Matching your dress (my fav), neutral (brown or black smokey or cream vintagey), or contrasting. Since you are doing this for prom, I think you should go all-out with the eye makeup. Not necessarily heavy, but black liquid liner and false lashes are always pretty.

I think for hers, a black and pink smokey look would look really cute.
Similar to my valentine's day look.

For yours, I actually think a silver smokey eye would be super hot with a blue dress! The shadow from this look, but with pink or red lips instead of coral. Blue is a cool color so you want to stick with cooler shades.

Or like this

Here is a tutorial for a colored smokey eye. This can translate to any color you want.

Since you will be taking lots of pics, stay away from using shadows with glitter. Matte or satin finish is fine. Oh, and using a lighter concealer under your eyes and the tops of your cheekbones will make you look bright and healthy.

If you want a neutral brown look, here is my "wedding makeup" look.

Hope this helps! I hope you have lots of fun at prom. :)
Jen

A couple more words of advice, PRACTICE your final look before the actual day! You want to know what to expect when it is important and a trial run will help. For prom night, you can bring your lipgloss or blotting sheets with you but travel light because you aren't going to want to carry it around all night. Also, BE GOOD. You want this to be a day you will remember, not one you can't remember and puke at and have to suffer with a hangover the next day. (Haha! But I'm serious! You want to look sexy and fresh in those photos, right? :)

If any of you girls do follow my tutorials please let me know. I'd love to see your pics of the fun night. Good luck and have a fabulous time!

L'Oréal Star Magnet Nailpolish

As promised, here is Part II of my recent nails. This post is actually going to be wholly about this amazing magnetic polish I had Polish Pixie get for me. Anyone remember those really cool Lancome Le Magnetique nailpolishes that made a really cool star pattern on your nail?

For those who don't remember, here is a refresher. Click image for All Lacquered Up's post on Lancome Le Magnetique - Bordeaux Esmee. Posted July, 2007.

Then, Lancome released a deep blue color last winter ONLY IN THE UK. What the...aksjlkasjflkajs?! Here is a photo. Click image for The Polish Addict's review, posted Feb 2009.

This comes to my story. After some research I found out that L'Oréal, the company that owns Lancome, decided to release some magnetic polishes in a few European countries (and not the US or UK even T.T) last Fall at DRUGSTORES to boot, called L'Oréal Star Polish. When I found out, I started asking every European friend I had.

Luckily, Inge from Polish Pixie (from whom I won the Hello Kitty fauxnad plate) happens to live in Denmark and willingly did a custom purchase for me (while also buying all of the remaining Star Magnet polishes in that store). A few colors were already sold out and apparently the store was told to ship the polishes back! I don't understand why it was only a limited edition release, but I am so happy I got my hands on 2 of them.

I've only worn Purple so far, but isn't it just incredible? I had trouble concentrating on anything because I was so distracted by my nails all the time. The dimension of these in sunlight is out of this world. Here are my pics.

The two polish bottles, Purple and Prune. They look more like a deep raspberry and plum color to me and they are quite small.

Here is the plastic cap-ring that has a circular magnet in it. There is a little ledge that the tip of your nail rests against to keep the magnet in place. The trick is to keep it steady for about 20 seconds and get close to, but not touch, the magnet.

Here is the result. Ring finger is 1 coat to show the polish plain, which is rather matte. Everything else is 1 plain coat + 1 magnetized coat.

Here is the completed hand with Seche Vite top coat. Look at this up-close because it is truly gorgeous and glowy. It reminds me of bowling balls. So cool!

Ahhh, I am such a sucker for anything shiny, sparkly, and unusual. This polish really hits the spot! If any of you can get your hands on these I recommend that you do. If any of you Europeans (Denmark? Finland? I think Singapore maybe got it? Anyone?) can find these in magnetic silver, magnetic grey, or red, PLEASE let me know as I'd love to have more. :)

Nails, Nails, Nails!

I have chosen the winners of the Revlon nails giveaway. Congratulations to Lulu and Caroline :]! I hope you enjoy these! For everyone else who missed out this time, no worries, I have lots of fun giveaways coming up very soon.

I wanted to catch up on a few nail-related items. I have a couple of recent konadicures and nail swatches, my Revlon nails removal experience that I've had lately, and a very cool special magnetic polish from Europe, but it's not all going to fit in one post. So part I today and part II tomorrow. :) Anyway, on with the swatches.

Zoya Sienna is an incredible color. It is SUCH a fantastic spring color and it actually looks good against my skintone! Shock of shocks, I can wear orange! It looks chunky here, but it's just the flecks. It's really smooth, especially with a top coat.

I jazzed it up with a little houndstooth konad pattern in gold. Two pics, cause it's that good.

Here is Essie Chastity. This is a barbie pink cream with a very, very slight lavendar tone that wasn't picked up in the photos. I liked this color plain best.

This was a failed Konadicure, methinks, because it had too much going on. A little too extreme-baby-cutesy-frosty with OPI Pricess Rule! on top to be flattering on my skin.

This is a new favorite polish for me, OPI Hey! Get in Lime! It's a really pretty light green cream polish that has a bit of a jelly finish alone. Formula isn't that great but what pastel cream polish is? Results are worth it. And I LOVED this lace pattern Konad over it. Very vintage-classy!

I had originally tried a dark purple, OPI Who Are You Wearing?, as the dark color but it just wasn't stamping well. If you are looking for a cheap black that is good for Konad, I recommend Rimmel 399 Black Satin. This was a tough, delicate pattern to pick up and it got the job done.

As for the Revlon artificial nails removal, I can't say it was a pleasant experience. You are supposed to soak them in acetone and the nails "melt" away, but I realized it wasn't so easy. I only had drugstore-type Cutex acetone remover (vs beauty salon pure acetone) and it took about an hour to completely remove! Granted, it came up much easier than real acrylic nails, but my finger pads were rather pruney and numb by the end. Make sure you have a towel handy to cover your hands and the small bowl you soak in so the fumes don't make you crazy.

Here is a photo during the process.

AHHH! GROSSS! Nails from the crypt!

Thankfully, the condition of my nails underneath seemed good. I clipped them down again and filed off any remaining plastic bits with a glass file without any more chips than usual.

Like I mentioned before, more nail goodness to come tomorrow!
