Dutch Braided Bangs Tutorial

Hi everyone! Just wanted to post up my braided fringe hair tutorial, which is the look I had for my Rock & Republic Eyeshadow review in my last post. I've worn this look and similar hairstyles a lot (like in my Smokey Eyes for Monolids tutorial) and get requests for a how-to pretty much every time it comes up so here it is!

The only products I used for this look are:

1 latex hair tie (comes in clear and black to match your own hair color)

2 bobby pins (I also recommend matching this with your hair color)

After a bit of investigation, I found that this exact style of backwards braid is called a "Dutch Braid". For the braided fringe, I really think the dutch braid looks cuter than the traditional hidden braid, don't you think? It looks more like a headband which I really like.

Here are some variations that I've done in the past:

headband-style strip braid

loose, large dutch braid with side pony

fringe strip braid with feather headband

Hope this tutorial wasn't too complicated! It's a bit tricky to explain but it's super quick and easy once you get the hang of it. If you guys end up trying it out, please share a pic to my Facebook page gallery. I love seeing the gorgeousness and creativity of you girls (and guys). Hehe.

Have a good weekend!

  1. Hi Jen :)
Long time quiet follower but now.. a real one? haha. I hope I'm firs to comment because I want to tell you that Kim Tae-Hee wears a similar hair style in "My Princess". I'm not sure if it's her real hair though, sometimes it looks like a hairband and sometimes it is her real hair. I think you pull it off as nice as her :)

  6. Thank you thank you Jen! I have always wondered how you did the side braid. It looks awesome on you. I have the same problem with my bangs - I never can get it to do what I want. Love Love Love!

  7. This is really cute and perfect for getting hair off your face. I don't feel that it'll flatter my face shape though, but maybe I'm just paranoid. LOL

  10. Looks so cute on you! hmm...I do this with my hair and I thought it was called a french braid - or using the french braid technique. Check mine out (very messy!) here:

  12. Hi Jen! I just started following your blog and I really like it! I actually got a headband that's like the braids when I was in Japan and I never wear it because it gives me a headache so this is perfect!

I'm just starting my own blog that's similar, it's on makeup and my writings at blissfullyke.blogspot.com, I hope you'll have a chance to check it out :)

  16. Please teach us how to make the big braids on the second picture... they're so lovely! Those braids made you look so young, Jen! ^__^

  17. I used to do this often with my bangs when they were being stubborn. ^o^ You look stunning, as usual!

  18. This video was extremely helpful! I've attempted this before, but I was doing it like a french braid so it looked weird. For the headband look, would you just start on the side of your head? How does that work?

  19. Aww thank you for posting up the video. I've been wanting to style up my hair more lately and I think all three of these looks are very cute and trendy. Definitely trying out the headband one soon. :)

  25. I braid my bangs on "bad hair days" too :D Unfortunately my hair is really fine so my braids don't look as nice and thick as yours! Haha

  27. I like doing this for when I don't want my bangs in my face. mine don't look as good as yours though, huu~
I'm going to try hiding the end part like you did next time I braid my fringe

  28. This looks really cute on you! Will try it sometime since I have a lot of side bangs, but I doubt it'll look as good as it does on you because I have a huge forehead and this will likely emphasize it more. I used to just just pin my bangs back in the middle to hide the part, and hubby told me not to do it anymore because it was too much forehead and looked unattractive LoL. Men have such strong opinions on the weirdest things sometimes...

  29. I've always done this style using the regular braid, I'm Going to have to try it using the Dutch braid, it is cuter then the regular braid way. Now for the headband style.... How did you do that? Did you start at the side of your head?

  30. Hi hello :]

    I really like this tutorial!
I'm dutch myself, and I never knew this kind of braid was called a dutch braid XD.
It's really popular here though, :]

  31. Thanks for such a great tutorial! I tried to do this before watching over the weekend and it was a disaster...You're so talented to be able to do all of this on my own head!

  32. Thanks for this tutorial! I have those days when I just want to chop off my bangs because they wouldn't cooperate, but this is a better alternative. :)
Just a quick question, where did you get the earrings you are wearing in the video? They are sooo cute and I wanted to know where I could get a pair? I love your videos by the way, stay beautiful unnie! <3
