Film & Photography Makeup - Away We Happened Tutorial

4:16 PM

Hi everyone! Today I finally have another makeup tutorial to share with you. As you know, I've been super busy these last few weeks working on Away We HappenedOne of the most important aspects of filming so regularly has, of course, been the makeup and looking ideal for the cameras. Since it's my first time acting on film, there have been many things that I've learned from trial and error with my hair, skin, nails, fashion, and everything in between so I want to pass on what I've learned to you. I'll start with makeup and then deal with skincare at a later time (Just as a warning, my skin has been going INSANE since I came out to LA so I'll have a lot to talk about on that subject).

Many of you have been requesting the makeup look that I've worn for the series and I've also been meaning to do a tutorial for "photo day" makeup, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.

Check out my tutorial below for tips on how to look perfect when the cameras are rolling!

PRODUCTS MENTIONED:

Basically, the look I was going for was neutral and a little bit smokey so that my eyes would stand out on screen and also so I wouldn't look so young. I'm well aware of the fact that I have a baby face and the character I was playing was a 20-something young writer, so I was going for something I would wear on a normal day but having each aspect amped up in intensity.

For those of you who aren't typically in front of a camera, there are a few things to keep in mind when applying makeup for film and photography.

1. Always err on the matte side. It's better to look too matte than too oily.
2. Skip the spf, unless you are shooting outside. Sunscreens and foundations with SPF will reflect the light and give you a white cast in flash photography and film with lighting set up.
3. Blotting sheets are your friend! It's a good way to remove oil without moving around foundation. Use blotting sheets before you are really oily so the foundation doesn't break down.
4. Have all of your color makeup be a couple notches stronger than usual because cameras will always wash out your makeup.

Hope this was helpful for those of you who are planning on filming soon or have a big picture day coming up! Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions about film makeup. :)

  3. Hi Jen,
Thank you for the tutorial in your busy schedule.
I just watched episode 5. I do like the make up at this episode better than previous episodes. Is it the same make up? Thank you again :) I enjoy watching Away We happened.

    1. I'm sure each day the application is a bit different, but it's basically the same. I think I skipped adding the shimmery shade since I knew we'd be shooting outside.

  8. Jenn,

I've followed you for a long time - since you posted on Soompi :) make up tutorials and all. I always remembered the birth mark on your lip --- and noticed that it's gone now! Did you get it removed? Can you share the experience? I'm going to get some birth marks removed from my face and would love to hear any feedback. ^_^ Thanks~

    1. Nope, I didn't get it removed. It has slowly faded over the last year so I guess it took about 10 years for the pigmentation to come up to the surface of my lips!

The process of getting birth marks removed from the skin is from laser/light therapy right? If you get it done, let me know how it goes!

  9. Hi Jen,

Thanks a lot for your tutorial! You always look gorgeous in your videos, but I wonder why you and all other other actors look so orange/tan in Away we happened? And actually, your smokey eyes don't look nice in the movie while it's so beautiful here. Is it because of the film quality? I don't mean to disapoint you or sth like that. I just tell you what I think. Please don't misunderstand!

    1. Hi Jenn!

I love the necklace you're wearing in this tutorial! Please let me know if it's still being sold somewhere? Thanks for sharing your tips--genius that you use two different colored setting powders. Do you like the finish of the Maybelline Dream Matte Powder? And it's so hard for me to make my own color makeup look darker for shoots--just looks so odd in normal lighting. =)

I have to disagree with Margaret, I thought you looked fantastic! I'm going to venture a guess that she was merely referring to California's harsh outdoor summer lighting. It was odd seeing you from various angles and seeing your entire outfits too--I'm used to seeing mostly your face as you speak directly to the camera.

I really look forward to your tips on hair and skincare: I have a lot of trouble with my hair and skin when I travel.

      photography tip:

If anyone wants to wear spf in the outdoors for a shoot (like an outdoor wedding), you can wear spf UNDER a layer of camera-ready makeup. Also, SOME spf foundations/powders look okay and don't lend that white cast. Just don't forget to take test shots of the look to be absolutely sure.

    3. I think it's a filter the guys added in post. I noticed that too! Trust me, we weren't that orange in person. It's not that way in every episode. :)

  11. Hi Jen, You are seriously so beautiful! I have a question... you wear lipstick and glosses so beautifully. I shy away from them, because I get that funky white line on the inside of my lips where the top and bottom lip meet. How do you prevent that from happening?

    1. One part of it is that your lips may be the type to frequently "shed" so if you aren't already exfoliating your lips regularly you may want to start with that. Another thing you can try is moisturizing with a balm before lipstick application. Also, try dabbing your lipstick on instead of swiping it. Let me know if any of the suggestions help at all!

  12. Jen, I'm a new fan from NYC, and love your blog! I am of Filipino descent and am curious about BB creams...just saw Maybelline's version in a drugstore and am wondering if you had any plans to try any drugstore options. Also wondering what you think about the Urban Decay outsourcing to China developments. Looking forward to more posts :)

    1. I want to try some drugstore BB Creams but I may wait to hear a couple reviews first, just because my skin is so sensitive. I tend to be a little hesitant about drugstore face makeup compared to high-end!

As for Urban Decay, I haven't heard enough or looked into the topic. I couldn't give a fair opinion there. :)

  13. yay a new video from you. Your makeup always looks gorgeous.
I think I mostly watch these videos to kill time. But I actually do learn things from you. In fact, I bought that Sonia Kashuk crease brush that you recommended. I've only used it once, and it's wonderful!

  17. Hey Jen, does wearing the shimmery or satiny shades in the naked 2 palette for flash photos look bad (like are the shimmers really noticeable it makes your eyes look weird) compared to other matte eyeshadow shades? I really would like to know because I've got a social coming up this september and I was deciding whether to use my naked palette or go for matte eyeshadow colours. Thanks in advance! (I'm Australian btw :D )

    1. You don't have to use entirely matte colors for photos, but I would at least stick to a matte or slightly satin highlight shade and avoid glitters altogether. I like using a matte lid shade with a satin contour color.

  18. Thanks for this great video Jen! I'm a fashion blogger and I feel like I always put on so much make up for my photos but it doesn't show in in pictures at all! Definitely going to try your techniques since I have most of these products (just picked up peach parfait last week and i LOVE it! Although it's much closer to a nude lip than I ever tend to do) By the way I have been using your blush contouring technique (from your basics video a while back) for several months now and it has changed my life! I've been recommending it to all my friends also since applying blush and wondering if we're doing it right is kind of something we all struggle with =) I also bought the Tarte blush in Exposed because you love it so much but I think my skin might be a little too dark for it, I can't get it to show up well

    1. That's wonderful to hear my blush technique is working well for you! Honestly, there's no "right" when it comes to makeup so any technique that you can perfect for you is the right way. ^_^ BTW, if you find Exposed not to be dark enough, try Blushing Bride because it's very pigmented and would probably be lovely on you!

  19. Hi Jen! Thanks for sharing your beautiful make up tutorial. I love this look so much. I just have question: did you put on any skincare before your foundation step?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I did my basic skincare before applying makeup and since we were specifically filming, I skipped any moisturizers with sunscreen (you should still moisturize, just use one without SPF) since that can be reflective on film when lighting on a set is being used.
