Manicure Monday: Maybelline Color Show in Pink Shock 200

9:00 AM

Hey guys! For today's Manicure Monday I wanted to share a Maybelline Color Show polish I picked up recently during my Target haul which I posted on my Youtube channel. Lately I've been dying for an eye-searingly neon pink for Summer and hoped Pink Shock would fit the bill. This was my first Maybelline polish experience so I wanted to share my thoughts on this newly acquired color.

Taking a look at the bottle, you can see that the shade looks indeed like a very hot pink but as you can see below, the color turns more into a pretty, neon-raspberry jelly on the nail. It's honestly a little darker than I was crossing my fingers for! Here I applied a base coat of OPI Nail Envy with 2 coats of Pink Shock for easy full coverage and Seche Vite to seal in the varnish.

In terms of application, I noticed the brush on mine was uneven which makes it a bit difficult to get a precise cuticle line. The polish itself applies easily but started getting goopy by the second coat. I also noticed that although I wrapped the tips (applying polish across the nail's free edge to prevent tip wear and shrinkage) the polish wears down on the edges within a day.

One last thing I wanted to mention is that I found the bottle itself to be a bit misleading. You can see at the bottom of the bottle here there is a lot of glass. When I checked the quantity of liquid, Color Show polish comes in at .23 fluid ounces for around $3-$4. Compare that to OPI polish which is .5 fluid ounces for around $8-$9. You get less than half the product in the Maybelline for nearly the same price per ounce!

I'm not going to lie, I am in love with this color and the pretty "Barbie" look it gives my nails (especially with the new pointed shape I recently started rocking) but the quality issues for the cost means I will probably not be repurchasing another Maybelline polish anytime soon since there are superior options at the drugstore.

Readers, have you tried Maybelline Color Show polish? What is your favorite drugstore nail polish? Let me know in the comments!

  6. Loving the color, but it's a shame in regards to your comparison with OPI. I actually quite like Cover Girls nail polishes, I love the packaging and they're quite affordable and the formula is great for the price. ^^

    1. Anna, I totally agree! I was shocked that so many people were saying bad things about Maybelline polish since it's a sister company to Covergirl and I really love the Covergirl polishes I've tried. Mine could've been a fluke but judging by comments I received on my haul video, it seems the Color Show series isn't so great.

  8. thanks for the review, jen! i saw a pretty purple the other day that i thought about picking up but i'm glad i didn't upon hearing your excellent quality/quantity/price ratio analysis. i was wondering if you could do a manicure basics review? a comparison of the different base coats, top coats and nail polish removers that you've tried? thanks for considering it!

  9. Very nice shade. I have a few from the same line but they don't look as good when I applied on my fingernails. Might be applying it the wrong way. Love your blogs and videos by the way :)
