October 2013 Favorites & YSL Baby Doll Mascara Review

4:33 PM

Hey guys! This month has been pretty intense (as Halloween season always is for me) so a lot of my favorites this month have been products that have been my go-to's when I don't have time to think about what to apply for makeup. That's not to say that the new items aren't spectacular! On the contrary, included are a few products which may be my future holy grail, omg-can't-live-without-it products. Check out my loves below.

I want to take a little time to share my love for YSL's Baby Doll Mascara. This is one of the few non-waterproof mascaras that I deem as passable for holding a curl on my short, straight lashes (my blog post on mascara tips if you didn't see it). It's still not as crazy curl holding as its waterproof cousin, but definitely one of my favorite mascaras I've tried to date.

The brush wand it my favorite kind of plastic, spiky bristles which I find applies mascara in clean, even layers which helps to prevent clumps. It also has small enough bristles that it grabs every tiny hair.

This results in being the perfect mascara for lower lashes. I'm not kidding, they come out perfect every time in 1 coat. Clean, long, and added volume without going clumpy or spidery.

This is a snapshot of my post-Baby Doll eye from my Elegant Date Night tutorial and can you see how my paltry lashes just look like they are naturally awesome? Yeah, it's the mascara. ;)

Now, if I could only find one that opens my eyes like this but holds my upper lash curl all day... Maybe it's wishful thinking but for now, this comes close to the top of my list for favorite mascaras.

Readers, have you tried YSL mascara? What is your favorite mascara for upper/lower lashes? Let me know in the comments!

  4. Hi Jen, would you mind to share which blue eyeshadow are you wearing in the video? It is absolutely gorgegous... 1. I find that if you keep bright shadows close to your lash line, creating a really deliberate shape (versus blended out) it actually makes it look more wearable, similar to a colored eyeliner. Try something similar to this tutorial. :)

  5. hi jen! i love your blog and your videos! i find that i end up falling in love with products i buy under your influence, so thank you for sharing your beauty knowledge with us all! i wanted to ask however, do you ever notice that dreaded white cast on your face when taking photographs with flash? if not, what foundation and setting powder combo do you use to avoid that issue?

    1. Thanks so much! I don't usually have a huge problem with white cast using the foundation and setting powder that I usually wear but it could just be my skintone masking it. Generally you will have more problems with it when using lighter shades of foundation as well as ones with SPF. People also say setting powders with silica also cause that flash back but I haven't personally had photo problems with that. Test out a combo of non-spf foundation (like Make Up For Ever HD) with various setting powders (I like Tarte Smooth Operator Powder). Take a pic of your face with flash at home before you go out to see what works!

  6. For Dystopian books, I would recommend the Delirium trilogy and the Matched trilogy. I have been loving the
Dystopian genre recently too!! Another slightly Dystopian type trilogy (the only part that reminds me of the Dystopian genre is the fact that it takes place in the future, but I definitely wouldn't categorize it as Sci-Fi at all) that I absolutely love is called The Selection. Princesses and royalty meets dystopian! If you ever decide to read any of these, tell me what you think because I could talk without end about these books!

  16. For curling Asian lashes, I've noticed that warming up the lash curler (make sure it is warm not hot!) and then curling outwards slowly helps. Then, adding Covergirl Natural Lash (the green tube with the leaves on it) REALLY holds the lash all day without getting gunky. I have Asian lashes and do not normally wear mascara because on a day to day basis, don't have time to bothered with all that jazz. However, when I do want to add some ooooomph to my lashes, that is the process I always use and works like a charm every.single.time.

  17. Clinique Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula allllllllll the way! Will never, ever, ever smudge or smear or create under-eye shadows, while every other mascara I've tried (I wanted to like Benefit's They're Real! so badly...) all contributed to raccoon eyes. Stickin' with the Clinique!

  18. i recently picked up the new l'oreal mascara voluminous butterfly and it's pretty awesome! it holds curls well (this is a new mascara judgement criteria i learned from reading your blog!), lengthens well and volumizes decently. most importantly, it's one of the few mascaras that will not smudge on me. out of all the mascaras i've been testing recently (i've gone through everything in sephora's lash stash except the lancome hypnoses), my boyfriend likes this second best. his favorite, and i have to agree, is the too faced better than sex mascara. the only problem with that is that expensive and it smudges on me. the raccoon effect can be fixed by anastasia's lash genius waterproof topcoat but then i've doubled the cost of an already expensive mascara and it also becomes a lot harder to remove. l'oreal butterfly also holds curls a little bit better than too faced better than sex.

  21. Hey Jen! I've noticed you really like the Hourglass ambient light. I've been reading all these amazing reviews about it, but just wanted to know, what's the difference between that and the Dior highlighter in Amber Diamond? (I'm hoping you can tell me because i bought Amber Diamond after watching your video too! =p)

anyway, love all your videos! you're amazing in what you do!
