DIY Remove Glitter Polish FAST & EASY!!!

Hey everyone! For January I wanted to kick off the new year with a few basic-type posts to answer frequently asked beauty questions. I have a range of readers from the makeup newbie to the connoisseur, but one thing I've learned over the years is to never assume everyone knows every trick for the basics. I'm learning new things constantly too so I don't want to forget covering something just because it's simple.

Good thing is, this nail trick is super simple no matter how aggravating or thick your glitter polish is!

Over the course of Manicure Monday history (click above to see the blog post) you've seen me wear a ton of glitter polishes, right? And that means hours of annoying time sucked away dedicated to ripping and scrubbing glitter particles off your fingers, getting it everywhere including on Husband whom we all know secretly appreciates looking like a pixie-dust fairy whenever he leaves the house.

Pixify your husband no more with the ever-so-dependable foil-wrapping method! ;)

The ingredients are simple and you probably already have them in your house:

1. 100% Acetone
2. Foil
3. Cotton Balls

This method has seriously saved me hours of my life, not to mention there is something so rewarding about sliding the foil wraps off and having the nail be so spanking clean with zero scrubbing! You also get foil finger monster hands fun for 5 minutes because we are all adults here and that means pretending to be a monster because you have foil hands. Yep.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! As I mentioned in the video, I was not the one who came up with this technique (I learned it from a nail blog when I first got into collecting polishes about 5 years ago) but I strongly believe it's something everyone who wears nail polish should know.

I want to do more basics in the future so let me know what topic you'd like a tutorial on next!

Readers, how do you typically remove your nail polish? If you have your own special twist or technique for stubborn polish, please share in the comments!

  1. Oh! I've seen this method before but never tried it for some strange reason...!! I usually just hold a cotton ball on my fingers one at a time (so time consuming) so thanks for reminding me about *this* method! :)

  8. I use a peel off base coat, and it works really well. When you want to remove your nail polish, you just need to peel it off. I use essence peel off base coat and it's really cheap !

    1. I had a lot of people suggest peel off bases to me but I've never tried it before! How long does it last?

  9. hi jen~ did you repurpose an old zoya remove + bottle and fill it with 100% acetone in the video? or are you using the remove + for this tutorial? thanks for the clarification!

    1. I loooove the bottle so I repurposed it. I recommend the original Remove+ so much though! :D

  10. Thank you so much for this tip! I've always had trouble with removing glitter nail polish -- it would take me such a long time to get all the glitter off. By the way, I don't know if you mentioned this in a previous entry, but I was wondering what sunscreen do you use?

    1. I've currently been using this Shiseido sunscreen. I like it but the fragrance is pretty strong!

  11. Thank you for your tutorial! How can I prevent the acetone from leaking from the soaked cotton ball into the skin? Do your finger tips sting after a few minutes of being wrapped up?

    1. I didn't have any problems with fingertips stinging, but the area near cuticles does get dry which is why I moisturized right after. The best way to minimize acetone on your skin is to have the cotton torn into small areas that will just cover the nail fully. You could alternately also put Vaseline on your skin near nails (avoiding the actual nail) beforehand. :)
