Valentine's Day (or Single Awareness Day, as some might say) is right around the corner and as I was thinking of what makeup to do this year, I came back to an old color favorite of mine, purple.
In my humble opinion, if you are going to wear a color but still want to look classy the easiest colors to reach for are purple and green. One just happens to be a little more romantic than the other and therefore became the inspiration of today's look!

See what I mean about purple not being too flashy? I think it's actually really flattering for daytime wear, especially if you have brown eyes. :)
You can also see the lips better in this image. Layering the nude lipstick on top of the red lip stick gives a soft milky pink look. These gradient lips are done frequently in Korean videos and dramas and I think it's a fun way to gracefully wear red on your lips without looking over-the-top.
Here you can see the glow of the holographic eyeshadow. It has a really lovely energy to it when you see it in person.

It has seriously been a go-to look that I haven't felt this strongly about since I first got my Naked Palette. Not only have I gotten tons of requests for this eye look specifically, but I've always gotten requests to do an all-drugstore look for those of you on a budget so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Full face: Metallic taupe w/ deep purple contour, golden pink cheeks, peachy lips

And at an angle so you can see how the contour color wraps around the metallic shade.
This gives the eyes a deeper, more dramatic look.

Oh, high school prom. If only I could go back and re-live my old prom days! It was a time when your biggest concern was if your hair would be curls down your back or an updo with braids. Honestly, I had a wonderful time at my old high school proms even though I didn't quite have the makeup skills I do now. ;)
I'll have to make it a point to dig up my old prom photos for some good laughs.
Until then, you will just have to endure this tutorial for prom makeup so you high school girls can get your dance on this year.
I was actually pleasantly surprised with these Forever 21 lashes. Usually when I see lashes this style they are too long but these are shorter and full, which is perfect for prom. They are a bit too much for everyday makeup but I think they add the right touch of drama for a special occasion.
I specifically wanted to do a look that would be adaptable for whatever colors will match your own dress, so I chose a bright purple as the main color so it would show up better on camera. I also have a golden peachy color on the inner half of the eyelids to brighten up the look.
I pulled my hair up to simulate how it would look with an updo. I actually like it better this way! It really shows off the eyes without all the distracting hair.
Here are some of my personal tried-and-true tips for prom or other special occasions with lots of pictures:
1. Avoid foundation with high spf since this will give you a mask-face in photos.
2. Go for a matte finish on your face instead of satin or pearl so you don't look oily.

8. Be safe and have fun! No matter what happens, you will never regret dancing with the girls, laughing, and feeling beautiful on prom night.

I've been URGING her to make a blog and I think she'll be putting that into action soon. She's a huge jewelry-maker and we are basically twins, aka she is 8" taller, blonde, blue-eyed and awesome. Well, at least we are the same at heart! ;D
Background to this look is that Hannah was convinced that both purple and copper don't look good on her and won't go with her skintone. I love a good challenge and vehemently disputed her claims and she, being a wonderful sport, let me play.

Tightline upper waterline and between lashes to fill in gaps and line the lower lashline with a blank space in the middle to lessen the severity of the line.
3. Contour color application on small lid space
Use a small eyeshadow brush such as a pencil brush so the crease color shows above the crease, but not so high it overwhelms the brow bone color.

If you need more help with "undertones" and figuring out which shades would be most flattering on you, please refer to my Beauty and the Color Wheel Theory post Generally, it's safe to say that warmer colors flatter warmer skintones while cooler shades flatter cool-toned girls. "Cool" usually means pink and "warm" usually means yellow-undertoned with an exception being MAC (mac cool = yellow and warm = pink. NC30 = neutral cool or yellow undertoned in shade 30).
Hannah's blessed because she falls pretty neutral and slightly warm so most shades will work for her except bruised colors like plum and pink. She wears a lot of greys and blues but I personally love bright colors on her like teal and green. ;)
Anyway, if people like this I might do more of these with a variety of different people. ^.^ What do you think? Diversity for the win!

Ahhhh, thank goodness it's the weekend! :D I love that my obligations today are to take pics while there is natural light, stop by Sephora to exchange a couple things, and to hang out with friends later tonight. Such a different change of pace from my usual of driving to work an hour, working 9 hours, then driving back home in the dark. XD
Well, this video is the result of trying to create video-worthy lighting at 10pm. Not the greatest of situations (my living room looks crazy now, with a floor lamp dragged across the room and my still-messy vanity tilted to the side) but it is in one piece! The battery even died out one or five times, so I hope the choppiness isn't too noticeable. You can tell at the lash application part. Magically, my lashes are totally on in the next shot. ;)

With the summer heat outside, I tend to want to wear lighter layers and loose tops. Sadly, indoor air conditioning isn't as forgiving so layers for me is a necessity. I haven't posted anything fashion-related for a while so I figured it was a good time to share some fairly typical work-wear lately.
Since I work in a creative field, I get to dress a little bit more casual and fashion-oriented than others in the building. Not quite weekend casual but certainly comfy and nice without being sloppy. Basically I'm saying that my examples won't be right for every office but it works for me. :)
Here are 3 face and fashion looks:
First is a very comfortable combination of dress, cardigan, and leggings. Rather Spring-Summery and the jersey material feels better than jeans. Gladiator sandals save my feet from wearing heels! A little bubbly, a little shimmery.

Next is an office-chic look that is secretly just comfy stuff too. An oversized t-shirt tucked into a jersey pencil skirt. My faaaaaaaavorite Michael Kors platform heels are really the only thing making it fancy. Lately I've been big into looking put-together using no accessories, and I think this outfit really does it.

Nude lips to compliment the deep green eyes. I think this green was from my Coastal Scents bajillion eyeshadow palette. Or maybe it's NYX wildfire.
And finally, what I like to call my "ballerina chic" type of outfit. Short flounce skirt, leggings, breezy tee, and boyfriend cardigan with a belt. I don't know what's wrong with me but I've been obsessed with these oversized t-shirts lately! So comfy, and so many ways to wear them. I think I have around 7 of them, all from Forever 21. :D

There is something to be said for good proportions in clothing. It's the key to minimal accessorizing. I keep thinking back to high school and college when I used to wear huge, gaudy earrings and necklaces all the time. Don't get me wrong, I still love those but I couldn't live without my simple pearl studs now. :)
Anyone else have a current "fashion phase" they are going through? Because I'm sure my simple accessories and big tees won't last me forever!
Since I work in a creative field, I get to dress a little bit more casual and fashion-oriented than others in the building. Not quite weekend casual but certainly comfy and nice without being sloppy. Basically I'm saying that my examples won't be right for every office but it works for me. :)
Here are 3 face and fashion looks:
First is a very comfortable combination of dress, cardigan, and leggings. Rather Spring-Summery and the jersey material feels better than jeans. Gladiator sandals save my feet from wearing heels! A little bubbly, a little shimmery.

I've still been sick lately so today I'm going to post a rather old FOTD (you'll notice my older hair) that I never got around to posting. Unfortunately, since it was from a while ago, I don't actually remember what products I used but I will try to remember what I can. I typically take a photo of the things I used to help remember but I happened to forget this time. FOTD fail. T.T
Anyhow, I loved this look so much that I'm going to post it anyway. This is a nice go-to party look. In fact, I actually did wear it to a party and I was generally pleased. If you have a purple or black prom dress, this would also work for prom too.
I believe I used NYX purple shadow on the lid with the highlight color from the "NARS" palette. I applied NYX Morocco to the bottom lash line as well as for outer-v definition. I also applied white shadow from a Revlon quad to the inner corners. MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack was on the upper lid and smudged onto the lower lashline too. I topped the eyes with Shisem falsies. Since this look was eye-heavy, I kept the lips neutral with a nude lipgloss.

Out of all of the NYX shadows I got from my last haul, I think Morocco is one of my favorites. It's just such a gorgeous, glowing iridescent bluish purple. Purples are warmer so they are easier for me to wear, but I feel like a lot of blues wash me out. Morocco is great for people who have a tough time wearing blues because it's a nice balance of depth and warmth for asian and deeper skin tones.
This was a look I actually did for New Years so it is perfect for going out for a festive night. Just a little smokey, just a little shimmery. Not TOO heavy, but sweet and sexy.
I used NYX Morocco for the lower lid/crease color and NYX Opal for highlight. NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Cottage Cheese was used for brightening the tear ducts, with MAC fluidline in Blacktrack for liner and false lashes to bring more impact to the eyes. Lips were NYX Circle round lipstick (nude color) with a clear gloss and Revlon Sugar Sugar lip topping to the center of the lower lips to add a bit of sparkle.

For my hair, I used Garnier Fructis Style Surf Hair Texture Paste on dry hair which I had previously posted about here. As before, I really love the beachy waves I get from using this product. It also smells really nice. I just need to wash my hair after using this for the day because the matte texture stays in there after the nice volume goes down from sleeping on it. Oh, and I had China Glaze OMG nails with this look. It was lovely together!
Speaking of China Glaze Holographic nail polishes, here are the pink holo swatches I promised.
Tickle My Triangle from the Kaleidoscope collection
I LOOOOVE this color! It has larger holo particles than the OMG collection but it still has the beautiful rainbow sheen and is totally smooth. Not chunky like glitter at all. Sadly, this chipped on me quicker than my OMG polishes but I've heard opposite reviews from other places so maybe this application was a fluke. This polish dries really fast too, so it's easy to apply. That's why I love China Glaze!

QT from the OMG collection
QT is a little darker than Tickle My Triangle and obviously has a smoother color. It's a sophisticated holo compared to some of the other colors. These are crappy pictures, but I wanted to capture the rainbow effect. Still quite pretty, right?

after Konadifying! only my second Konad attempt using plate M38 (or actually mine was a fauxnad B29.) I ordered more plates so hopefully they will come soon! Tips were NYX Girls Special Glitter Nail Polish in CN229. And I'm holding a Hello Kitty vinyl figure from Urban Outfitters. ;)
